Whiting: Red Bull's wing is legal

http://planetf1.com/news/18227/68444...-wing-is-legal
Quote:
Charlie Whiting has dismissed claims by Red Bull's rivals that the reigning World Champs are running an illegal front wing.

Following Sebastian Vettel's dominant display in both qualifying for the Australian GP and the Sunday evening race, Lewis Hamilton insisted that the German had an unfair advantage.

According to the McLaren driver, Vettel's wing flexes more than the rules allow.

"Did you see Vettel's front wing?" he said. "It bends down to the ground and gives him about half a second."

However, FIA race director Whiting insists there is nothing wrong with the front wing of the RB7.

"We found nothing unusual," Whiting told The Bild.

"For the front wing, the test conditions were even harder now. Vettel's car was always in order."

I now expect to see a Flexi-wing on McLaren within 4 races.

Hamilton just can't accept that Vettel is faster than him. He should let Vettle pass.

Old news, McLaren people have been saying this since last year...
FIA imposed more loading and stricter testing of front wing, and yet both RB6 and RB7 passed scrutineering at any point of the season.

Don't blame FIA or RBR cheating. Its just you've developed a slower car than RBR...

I dont think what Hamilton said was all that bad, he said if its illegal than it needs to be addressed and if its legal then they need to copy it

pretty sure everyone was thinking the same thing

I'll say it again.

I expect a flexi-wing on the MP4-26 in less than 4 races.

But will they get it right? We're not sure.
Last year they tried to copy RBR's blown diffusor in German and British GP, but only tested on Friday and didn't work as they wish.

And in the season beginning they were chasing ghost on the "active suspension" that they claim RBR has.

Just something I came across while watching The Flying Lap. I'll limit my commentary to just note that the car is not braking in this picture. The DRS is still active and that wing looks low.

Given that pass FIA's pre-race and post-race scrutineering, and if it indeed gives like 0.5 sec advantage. Then its a brilliant design.

It's probably illegal, F1 is full of finding hoplessly complex solutions to cheat. This would be very very expected.

Then how it passed FIA's scrutineering? Especially the test load for the front wing has doubled from early last year.

If RBR used some material/design that the wing remains rigid during static test, but flex once there's dynamic wind load. Then its a brilliant design and technically did NOT violate any rules, but the spirit of the regulation.

I've heard some interesting theories about how they've done it. Between the type of weave of the CF, whether it's filled with some kind of thermal liquid or substance that changes once heated up, or if it just has a certain threshold well above the tests but just before racing condition forces where it deflects significantly. (ie, the wing may deflect at 300kg, but if the test is only conducted at 100kg then there will be minimal change)

Lets also not forget that even though they did double the test weight, they also doubled the acceptable deflection range.

Also, most recent speculation is saying that the nose itself also deflects down resulting in the entire front wing tilting more.

The end plates in this video alone move an immense amount.

Now that's brilliant!!!
Anyhow, my point is, as long as it pass the FIA scruitneering, other teams should just STFU and start modifying their wings and do major upgrades.

McLaren has been saying "Flexing wings" for almost a year....even if RBR has a flex-wing that passes FIA regulations. That means they're on the limit of technology that the regulation allows. And I don't think RB7 can win by just one single part that outstanding. The overall chassis and package is top notch all the time.
