I might finally get a DSLR...read on

Quote:
popular digital SLR cameras from Canon and Nikon generally set you back around $1,000. But discounters will likely drive that down to $299 by year's end, says Chris Chute, an analyst at researcher IDC.

looks like I might finally get my DSLR and can take some real pictures and not 4mp pics.:rocks:

yes i understand that but they will cost considerably less then 1k. Prob closer to 500-600. which is much closer to my budget for a new camera.

theres a couple cheap 400 ish 10+ mp DSLRs you can buy now, they just dont have some of the focusing/metering technology the more expensive ones have

If you're really dieing for an SLR check out a used Rebel XT or XTi (if you want to go Canon), I think you can get a used Rebel XT for around $500 I think...

Canon vs. Nikon is for another thread (go Nikon! ) but teknochild is right...you don't have to wait until later this year to get a high-quality dSLR brand new for around $500. Check out the Nikon d40. Here's a review: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm

I believe there is a new d40 coming out with the electronics of the d80 meaning 10.2 mp. I twill still have the same basic d40 body.

Honestly, I really think the whole Canon vs Nikon argument only works when you first buy a DSLR, because the minute you start buying lenses, there is no way you're going to sell it all to move to a different mount. I think it all comes down to how it feels in your hands, I really like the Rebel XT vs the Nikon D50 that I held so I went with the XT. Now I'm a tripod, 2 (soon to be 3 lenses and a battery grip), and an external flash in lol..

i saw that, it lacks the more sophisticated auto focus, metering, and color reader as the d80 though

doubt it will make hardly any difference at all though, especially if you select your own color and focus and stops

BTW 30 bucks says most people in this thread dont know the proper pronounciation of nikon

Ditto Caster's comments - once you choose a body style, you'll start adding lenses. After you buy your first couple, it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to switch brands. They are both extremely good brands so it always comes down to what you choose first. Personal preference is the biggest factor as prices are comparable between the brands.

The only capability difference I've come across yet is that Nikon has an Auto ISO feature that Canon does not. To me, this is a setting that only a few will tinker with and fewer yet would even use on a regular basis. Those who know their camera's capabilities will opt to go with setting ISO and adjusting the other settings. Image sensors are of such excellent quality these days, you can shoot a wide variety of ISO settings and not be able to tell much of a difference under certain lighting conditions so I think Nikon's philosophy was to add a feature because they could. Canon chose not to (that is, unless they've decided to add it). All I know is that in my 1Ds Mark II body, I don't have the Auto ISO setting and even if I did, I'm confident I wouldn't use it because I'm a control freak. I leave very little up to the camera to decide for me.

Good luck with your choice! Check out the online stores: B&H and Adorama... also newegg... They're my top 3 choices for equipment but now and then, I buy stuff from the local pro camera shop to help keep them in biz since I believe there is value in supporting local businesses.
