Is it normal ?

Ever since I've got my 335i I have noticed that there is a bit of soot in the exhaust pipes like in diesel car, its not like a black powder but its stuck in the pipes and sort of hard to clean. Is it normal in a petrol car or something is wrong ?

I think it's normal.

All petrol cars have blackened exhaust tips. DPFs keep diesel tips clean these days

It is normal, however petrol cars only have blackened tips if they're not cleaned!

Attacked mine yesterday with a polishing drum attached to a cordless drill and plenty of Autosol

Perfectly normal, should be sootier in the right hand side pipe too!

Need to up that pipe polishing maintenance regime though....

335i pipes do get particularly filthy. They chuck out loads of shit.

The 335d on the other hand seem to have always very clean pipes due to the DPF.

Ive noticed my right one is dirtier. Why is this?

When the engine is cold (or is it at low revs?) I think all exhaust is passed through the right hand pipe.

Once warmed up (or revving higher?) there's a valve that opens and allows exhaust to pass through both pipes.

As a result of the above, the right hand pipe is exposed to more exhaust gases so gets dirtier faster...

As said, the anti-boom flap in the left hand pipe is shut at cold idle and other engine speed / throttle.

So RHS gets more fumes!!

Petrol cars USED to have clean pipes, maybe a tinge of brown or light grey, before Unleaded and CATs put paid to that.

I've found that cleaning my rear pipe with Brasso leaves it shiny and ready for action.

Oooer missus.........OK Brasso works well, I''ve found. As does Autosol.

This topic is impossible to comment on without double entendres!
