CV Joints

Got a clicking/graunching from one side outer rear whell, I suspect its a CV joint on its way out.
Low speed, any load and every revolution. Can be felt by hand turning the wheel. Its not brakes or grit or shields...

Will run it on stands tomorrow to see if I can see it jumping about, but until then has anyone had to replace a driveshaft?

I'm after a rough cost, and if you went aftermarket, oem, exchange shaft or just regreased yours?

I can do this at home with a remanufactured part, realoem actually list a part number for this.
So the next question, if I pull the bolt out of the lower arm etc, is there sufficient room to remove the whole shaft after unbolting the diff output flange and hub nut?
(i.e as easy as most cars)

Are they not simple universal joints?

I wouldn't have thought they'd use CV joints on rear shafts, just on FWD where steering angle is the issue?

Anyhow, not heard of one failing before, let us know how you get on at the weekend..

Could it be a wheel hub bearing? I've definitely heard of those failing on E9x.

Yes, UJ might be accurate.
My S2K had CV joints inboard but I'm not familiar with the BMW yet,

Its not serious yet mate, but they only go one way.
Maybe if its outboard I can slip the gaiter back and grease it.
Inboard looks like its attached to the flange so needs unbolting?

This is quite common on older 3ers.
Hub bearing is another possibility you are right.
Wife keeps hitting kerb and it may have been harder than she has let on!

I dont have much time at present, it may have to get offloaded to the local indy anyhow althought I hate paying others
