Rumble in the Beemer

Hello people, I'm quite new here, can anyone help, just bought an E91 3 series on a 56 plate, it's done 95k is 2.0 d, it's got a rumbling noise which gets quite loud around 40 mph and when braking, I was convinced it was a wheel bearing and just had the car to Northwest BMW, they drove it and thought the same but since I got it back the rumble is still there, the front two tires are near the wear marker and I've heard that this may be causing it as they are runflats, anyone else had similar probs, I'm hoping that if I change the front tires it will go, think I might have wasted my money on that bearing

the goodyear f1s on my audi made a rumble when they were low on tread, sounded similar to a bearing rumble. If they need replacign its worth doing that before incurring more costs

Replace the tyres. Might as well switch to non rft while you are at it whole set of fallen fk 452s for same price as those rub flats after all!

Getting rid of run flats

Thanks for your reply everyone, I would like to go to non run flats but I was told at north west BMW that this would mean the run flat pressure warning on the dash would be on all the time as a normal tyre flexes more and makes the sensor think you have a puncture, any one know firstly if this is right, if so is there a way to code it out or anything, cheers Lee

Never done it on mine, just when first fitted.

Pretty much bollox, I had non-RFT on my last car for 18 months with no warnings.

Too much voodoo seems to be spoken about RFT, they're just tyres with stiff sidewalls.

That really is rubbish, the tyre pressure warning light is triggered when the ABS sensors measure a smaller diameter wheel caused by a puncture / air loss.
Fitting a non run flat will have no effect on this.

Thanks guys think I would be better off with normal tires these run flats are too noisy and unforgiving on our bumpy roads, the noise under braking is pretty loud, the garage can't find any other fault on the car, mind you they told me the run flat story!! Any one any ideas, I've had the wheel bearings checked and one replaced ( unnecessarily I think as it made no difference except to my wallet!) I'm thinking tires, tracking, control arm maybe, it's a humming noise, starts around thirty five, goes louder on deceleration and braking, its really peeing me off, I bought this car for comfort and refinement and it's louder than the bloody van I used to drive, HELP!!

Well you need tyres anyway but I've got some spare wheels here if you want to try it to at least rule them out.

PMight be your tyres. When my wheel bearing went, the dash lit up with amber for the traction control systems and ABS and everything related to wheel speed, so brakes, cruise control, tyre warning... it did make my heart miss a beat as I was on the M4 at some speed when everything started to bong and ping and dash lit up!

I pulled over and then called BMW who advised that I drive on knowing my ABS etc was not working. Took 3 days to get it repaired!

Well, the front RFT can wear strangely and on the inner edge of the tyre.

I had a Passat recently that thrummed badly - the inner edge of the rears were out of shape.
That is a common complaint on newer passats - they look like knobby tractor tyres eventually.
So I wouldnt discount the tyres just yet.

Initially I would also agree with the dealer diagnosis of front wheel bearing, but these noises are not easy to pin down.

It's not actually eminating from the rear axle is it?
Im thinking diff whine here...

Tyres should be fairly easy to rule out if you know anyone with a set of winters or spare set that you could try. It shouldn't take more than 30-40 mins to swap the full set at home and then see if it makes any difference? It's not like you need to drive far on the tyres to rule this out.

Heck you would think that the dealers could easily borrow a set from one of the cars on their lot and check this.
