break-in for the 335d
now before anyone says anything, i know this topic has been discussed to death but most threads relate to the i models and harldy any to the ole super diesel...
also people dont seem to unimously agree... i have done 200 miles so far driving mostly carefully but putting my foot down every now and then to try and use the rev range a bit more... this was deduced from a fair amount of posts on this forum, but a lot of people think you should baby it for like 2000 miles have i messed it up doing it like this or shall i proceed as is? should i even be using the kick-down yet? should i stay out of ds mode? i hate breaking a car in, there is an awesome machine at my fingertips and it can't be used properly - its frustrating like having a private dance at a strip joint! (i wouldn't know like, i'm married ) (i'll try and stop posting stuff now, i can't help it if you lot are so damn helpful) |

Zim, don't red line it like I do! Wait until 2,000 miles before you use the full rev range. However, I wouldn't be too strict. Its good that you are varying the revs and using the power every so often. Don't drive like a granny for 2,000 miles and don't drive like Schumacher for 2,000 miles, but somewhere in between.
I couldn't help going over 4,500 revs every now and again during my break-in period and it didn't do my car any harm. Its an animal now though!! |

There is a post in that thread about how Jay (jhbodle- another UK member who should be coming to UK3 also) carried out the 'break-in' on his 325i petrol engine. I think it is just as relevant for the 'diesel' boys! All the best. Viv |

he mentioned that the first 20 miles can be the most important... have i blown it? (i thought id done 200 but its only 100 at the mo...)
better start doing some engine breaking... i'm only getting 14MPG at the mo i'm guessing thats just a new car thing right?? |

Just take it easy & use the engine breaking technique that Jay suggests. All the best. Viv BTW ZiM- can we call you Simon, or something else, at the meet? |

MPG will be low at first and will improve. However, 14 mpg sounds really low. Are you sure you are not driving a Lamborghini Gallardo? |

More seriously it should climb pretty quickly from that. But remember that in the first few miles it will have spent some time just being moved around during transport and PDI so to begin with the numbers will almost certainly look awful.

Aside from those it takes a couple of hundred miles for new tyres and brakes to get up to speed. I personally took it easy for a couple of hundred miles, then gradually opened it up more and more. I'm not sure about the 'hard break in' theory, but I've never followed the manufacturers break in instructions on any car. BTW - I'd guess you are showing 14 mpg because for most of it's short life your car has been idling stationary (e.g. while the dealer showed you how to work it etc.... ) |

Have you checked the tread on the tyres? I'm sure the Zim-mobile is in top class condition and perfect working order!

My engine definitely seems to be loosening up now I've done just over 4,000 miles, and seems more eager to pull in almost every gear.
I don't know about red-lining it though, the engine has quite a lot of mid-range power that you hardly need to; in D you really can't, and in DS I think you'd lose your license in no time. Now I know why track days were invented...

We've done about 200 miles now and the wifes had it up to around 80 (about 2K RPM) a couple of times on the way to work. No heavy throttle or kickdown as per the handbook. The dealer told us to check the oil regularly as they appear to use a bit in the first couple of thou? Incidently how many miles were on the clock when you picked yours up, we had 7. Regards Chris

it's probably not all complete thrashing
they have to drive it on/off transporter etc... to get it to the garage, i guess they would test it at the factory as well. from what i've heard/seen they redline it in every gear (including reverse) before it comes out of the factory. so much for the gentle break in period in the manual! |
