Steering gone

Had the joy of being 'recovered' on a low loader on Saturday. Car dropped of at dealer Sat PM, me now in a Avis car (118d) courtesy of Mondial via my extended warranty.

It looks like the Belt that drives the power steering pump has come off, cue Red Warning light - Not Charging, and became impossible to steer safely. Recovery driver reckons the pulley has failed in some way, not the belt (otherwise there would have been shards of it all over the engine bay)

Going to be interesting to see how this is resolved once the dealer has chance to investigate. Warranty exclusions include 'Auxiliary drive belts'

Dont want to speculate too much right now, but could do with some understanding of what this belt drives, and if there is an diagram somewhere of what it is, what else it does etc.

Garage List
Could be a failed tensioner/idler - I'm not conversant with the 35i engine though.

I have had two failed PS pump bearings on other marques.

Indeed, the front bearing collapsed on both occasions (once due to over tighteneing the serpentine belt) and threw the belt on one, busted belt on the other.

Turns out the power steering pulley has failed, chucking the belts off. Parts due tomorrow, should be back on the road tomorrow evening. All covered under extended warranty. In the meantime I'm enjoying the 118d.

Thanks Doughboy, not the only one who is glad its sorted. I did some digging on line, and there has been a couple of examples in the US. Also, front subframe has been known to move in extremis and because it is close to the belt, can cause rubbing/thrown belt.
