Turbo :(

Well 120k and the turbo has died on my e90 320d sounding like a siren, iv read on here there sh!t turbos an was wondering if one off a lci would fit? Or even one off of a 330d or are the lci different because mines a 163bhp and thats a 177?. Would a 330 turbo be too big? cheers taylor

Fitting a bigger turbo will at best cause your car to overheat and at worst melt the block.

There is more to it than just bolting it in.

Feel bad for you. There are many threads on here with regards refurbished turbos or repairs which is what I'd recommend you do.

Do you know if it is the mitsubishi turbo again?

wont fit buddy,its to be the same as what comes of and chances are it will be a mitsubishi.
even the garret wont fit.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news but i suffered it last year.

Jesus! Seems like another turbo goes every day on here. 120k is nearly twice as much as most of the other though.

It won't make it " over heat and melt. Lack of coolant does that. Any turbo engine suffering detonation can "melt" a piston through not having enough fuel and too much boost.

Bigger turbo does not = over heating!

OP just fit a recon turbo.

ah well life goes on! cheers for the replys. Todays top tip:- dont buy a e90 out of warranty it costs a lot of money ha

i think the tip of the day is if your going to buy a high miler car your going to expect something to blow

I was just thinking. The lci's could turn out to have shit turbos as well. Most lci's will be low mileage at the moment so who knows.

Yes. But it's a 318d and according to Real OEM the turbo is a different part number so I'm hoping they last longer.

Funnily enough, I got held up on the way to work this morning by a 320d that had died in the outside lane of the Clyde Expressway.

I wonder if its the cold weather this winter that made them pop, my car sounds really rough on cold morning i let her warm up at least 5 mins before i drive, in below 0 temps

I remember as a boy people use to say BMW's with 100k are just running in and do triple that.

Have the run of the mill cars caught up or have BMW's gone backwards.

The Mitsi turbo (TF035HL6b-13TB-VG) CANNOT be rebuilt reliably. The Garrets can as Garret supply the parts. Mitsi dont and you have to "stoop" to Chinese parts and they just are not up to it apparently.

I have been told this by Turbo Technics and a few other players (big and small), they wont touch them as they keep coming back.

Midland Turbo did offer but advised upwards of 500 ish to do so because of the complex nature of the VNT in the housing on these. Replacing seals and bearings is piss easy on them, ANY work on the housing is pointless IMO.

They can be had for 700 + vat but there is no stock at all in UK/Europe......trust me. I tried.

Seemingly, Mitsubishi make just enough to keep BMW stocked.

Every BMW dealership I phoned had one on the shelf ffs.

If you can afford it (which i couldnt) just go to BMW and buy one, remember they need your old one or you get stung more.

Ours went at 94K and my St. Paddys day will be consumed replacing it + oil + filters + removing and inspecting the sump etc etc

Also,

They might be a bit scarce for a good while now with the unfortunate events in Japan.

While the factories may not have been directly affected, transportation problems, power loss, staff issues etc will have its toll

Nor do you want a turbo that glows green and sets of geiger counters everywhere

Buy one from BMW

Hi mate sorry to hear about that i going through the same drama even after replacing the turbo the car won't start and seems that the damn engine has gone I got a new turbo for £780 it was the Mitsubishi one from a garage in east London if you want can pass their details to you and they delivered next day - good luck with it
