Red Bull Infiniti

Quote:
Red Bull's Renault engines will be renamed Infiniti this season in a move that will boost the world champion team's budget by at least £7m.

Infiniti - the premium brand of Japan's Nissan, part-owned by Renault - is using F1 to boost its global profile.

The engines will be the same, branding aside, but the plan means Red Bull will get their engines for free.

That will save the team 8m Euros (£6.8m) a year, the cost of all customer engine supplies in Formula 1.

It is not yet clear whether Renault/Nissan will provide further financial support for Red Bull, but even if the deal just provides for free engines it will be a significant boost to the team.

It means that money - estimated to be about 4-5% of their total budget - can be freed up to be spent in other areas, potentially increasing performance.

Red Bull had been the only title-contending team who had to pay for their engines. The price for such deals is fixed at 8m Euros by an agreement between all F1 engine manufacturers through the teams' umbrella group Fota.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel won the drivers' title in 2010, becoming the youngest champion in F1 history, while the team also won the constructors' championship.

The team will start the new season as favourites - their new car, the RB7, has looked the class of the field so far in pre-season testing.

Red Bull's closest rivals look set to be Ferrari, who saw Fernando Alonso narrowly lose out in the drivers' title battle to Sebastian Vettel last season.

The Red Bull-Infiniti deal is expected to be announced officially at the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday.

Nissan and Renault are trying to boost Infiniti's presence in a highly competitive market, in which its rivals are giants such as Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes.

The two companies have been in partnership since 1999, with France's Renault holding a 44.3% shareholding in Nissan and the Japanese company owning 15% of Renault.

Its a Win-Win for RBR and Renault, RBR could care less how they brand the "Renault" engines. But the engine supplier becomes a "sponsor" is a nice addition to RBR.

We know, they know, FIA knows the engine underneath is the "same spec" Renault engine they used last year. (Engine Freeze till 2012 season?)

I'd guess Renault is preparing to boost Infiniti sales in North America (Canadian GP and US GP in Austin in a few years), as well as Europe/Russia (Russian GP is in the horizon too...)

Geeez where were you guys. It's been about 10 years ...remember in the early 2000's when Nissan had about 6 models in north america...annonymous altima, ugly sentra,no name truck, rebadged Mercury Villager. Only the pathfinder and maxima were decent. Renault saved these guys. Carlos Ghosn came in as a CEO and turned the ship around.

He was also the one re-intiated the Nissan GT-R program. I recall he's got sick in the GT-R prototype back in 2007 or something.

I remember saw him in the GT-R documentary...

What I don't get is the article in Autosport I read that states that Infiniti has NO interest in rebadging the Renault powerplants as Infiniti.

Seems official now...

I'd say its a decision made by Renault-Nissan, and Infiniti being a subsidiary has no decision making on these?

I know what you are saying, but the majority of Infiniti owners I see are older. The coupe doesnt account for the majority of their sales. Maybe its just where I live - I see way more sedans than coupes.

Agree, but I don't think many elderly are that vocal and actually gives a damn about F1...Its the teenagers who will be more cocky and brag about the engine underneath is as good as the Infiniti (Renault) RS27 - 2011 engine that's in the RB7 chassis....

"Watch this! If Vettel can do this in his infiniti....I can do this too!!!"
*Crash*.....

lol I like reading about the Infiniti bashing here, funny but mostly untrue

Any who yea thats odd they are partnering up with RB Racing, its not common anymore to see car manufactuers sponsoring F1 cars, Tata sponsors Ferrari but that may have to do with them partnering with Fiat. Personally I have always been a Ferrari fan, dating back the the beginning Schumacher/Brawn era, good stuff baby, back when F1 was all about power an no limitations with those amazing V12's. Alonso all the way!

Just wanted to say, no not all Infiniti drivers are what you guys described them to be. Ive had the G35 coupe and now currently have a G37 coupe, love the cars for the value and what I get for the money. My brother has a 335xi coupe and each time I drive that car, I fall in love with it and understand why its the ultimate machine.

Don't take it too seriously, especially on internet forums.
Every group of car enthusiast got some really fantastic people, nice, cheerful, pleasure to discuss ANY cars with them. Of course (or "for sure" in Massa's mouth ), then there's some who are just arrogant and stupid, wouldn't learn every car manufacture has its upside and weakness.

We say Infiniti drivers are cocks, sames goes when other people talks about BMW drivers, Audi drivers, Honda, Acura, Scion, etc etc...

Here in a bimmer forum, we're just making fun of other brands
Given many of members here were once an Infiniti owner, JDM fan (many still are now)...We're joking just for a laugh for the day....take it easy...don't take it too seriously....

(Was it because the season start was delayed and you're bored )
