HDD Map Updates
Is there any way of updating the maps on a HDD i-drive sat nav apart from a trip to the stealer?
If 'no', what sort of prices are stealers asking around the country? I'm used to paying £30 over t'internet for an up to date disc for the 1 Series, but this doesn't appear to be an option. |

I had the map upgraded on my HDD sat nav from 2008-2 to 2010-2 sometime last year.
You have to buy the maps disc and it was something around £160. They didn't charge me any labour for installing it, but they had the car in anyway for a service. I'm not sure whether you can do it yourself with just the disc ordered from the parts dept. or not. The disc came with a one-time only use activation code so the discs I have can't be used on another vehicle. I presume that means you there is no way to update it without the official discs either. It is silly money really, but I use it everyday all over the country and the new maps are actually a significant improvement and in my experience surprisingly up to date with new roads. |

I didn't think map data was on a disc for the HDD, thought it was something the dealer loaded from a file?

There are 3 DVDs in the box, they are used to update the data on the HDD. You only need to keep hold of the discs in case they had to replace your HDD and re-install.

If you wanted to install yourself you would need the enabling code and a copy of that particular Nav version ie 2011. This is of course assuming you have professional 609. Vehicles with Business 606 HDD is a similar method but the update is done by programming at dealer or through USB in glovebox. In addition to this if you want full 7 digit postcode search then your vehicle would need to be programmed to version 2.39 (currently 2.40) or later and have 2010-2 or 2011 nav data. Hope that helps |

I didn't get any discs with the car? As the mapping is loaded on the hard drive, I didn't realise that I should have had. Do I need to go back to the dealer?

You only get discs when you buy the upgrade, nothing came with the car originally

In your earlier post you say that the 2010 update is a 'significant improvement' over the 2008 (which is what I currently have installed). Apart from the up to date maps, what other improvements are there? |

None - its just the maps I was referring to. I seem to remember several roads that were missing in the 2008 maps and errors like one way streets etc. 2010 maps much better

It's sounds as if you've just missed out and have version 2010-1 (push idrive controller in nav screen to the right and scroll down to see version). However, you can still get the first 4 digits of the postcode. (If I'm reading what you have said correctly). Make sure you have Great Britain selected (not Europe) as country. Then under city enter the start of the postcode, the first 4 will get you near your destination then manually narrow it down. I would say there are more benefits to updating than just full postcode, including more buildings on the 3D view being available and obviously any changes/improvements to our ever changing road network and of course speed limits !! |

Is the USB method exactly the same as the DVD pgrade method, but instead of having DVD disks to insert - BMW supply the files on a USB stick/drive?? Do you know if you can get the DVD disks and rip the files to a USB stick - is it possible to then install and upgrade the Bus Nav System? Thx

To your first question, yes that is correct. Business Maps are loaded either through programming at the dealer or through the g/box USB with a USB sticks which are purchased with the map already on them. Then the enabling code is entered on the idrive the same as Prof. To answer your second question, no you can't do that. The reason is they are completely different in terms of data. The prof maps are huge files (somewhere around 13 Gb I think) where as the Business version is much smaller. Plus, the maps are coded differently, so you would need a Prof enabling code which as your car has Business you wouldn't be able to get. If you had the Business map on your PC say, I guess you could load it onto a USB stick but I wouldn't know if it would work. Far easier to just buy the stick or have it loaded as part of programming. |

Many thanks for the quality information Pyth_UK - much appreciated.
I have learnt something today... lol Must admit I have never heard or seen these Map USB Sticks for sale. Have you ever come across any websites that sell them - or at least has some detailed info on them? Cheers

1. USB stick with map (Around £20 to £30 I think) 2. Enabling code for map (Around £140 I think for Business) There is an online parts catalogue for BMW, this might give you a better indication. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...23&hg=65&fg=50 People will say I'm biased, but by far and away the easiest thing to do is let your dealer do it and also to do it during update programming (if can stretch to it). You get all the software done and updated on your vehicle (not always necessary but always preferable) and you get your map updated at the same time. Oh and if your dealer does it you don't need to buy the USB, just the enabling code as your dealer already has a copy on the programming PC |

So for a car with professional Nav and to get full functiobality, I would need
1. Maps 2. Activation code 3. Install time 3. Software upgrade What is the ball park figure for cost. What benefits will the software upgrade bring, my car is a Jan 09, e92. |
