Bio diesel
I have a 335d saloon and wondered if I can run it on Bio Diesel, it’s says not to on the fuel cap but the boys from Top Gear managed it with an E46 330d. How hard can it be?
I’ve talked to an engineer who said it should be OK so long as you don’t let it sit in your tank for too long as it goes off. I use a tank a week so no problem there. Sorry if this has been up before I'm new to this. 335d lowered BBS CH |

Do not do it. Unless you like gummed up fuel delivery systems.

Biodiesel is corosive, in topgear it destroyed the fuel pump in matter of laps.
Morrisons use 5% mix of bio which is safe anything more you risk killing the engine as it will eat the system

335d is my idea of saving a few quid. I've traded down for an M3. But I just thought I could give Mr David Cameron a little less of my hard earned cash to blow on helicopters that don't fly and aircraft carriers with no planes. Anyway I guess that it's a none starter. Thanks for everyone’s input.

Doesn't the fuel filler flap state 'No bio diesel' or am I getting confused with my Mum's Octavia that defo. states that.
Either way, there will be good reason why you shouldn't use bio-diesel..........just little things like the cars fuel pump, fuel filters, associated filters and other gubbings are NOT designed to run on that 'stuff'. It also produces degrees of sludge that requires filters to deal with it. Anyhow, looks like you've now 'seen the light'. |

I noticed that Tesco diesel has 7% bio-diesel. I think that is the upper limit for BMW engines. As far as I am aware, all diesel has some proportion of bio-diesel in it nowadays.

The UK introduced the "Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation" in 2008, which required road fuels to contain 5% fuel from renewable sources by 2010 - i.e. biodiesel. This is similar to the EU biofuels directive 2003/30/EC. I believe the 5% is allowed within EN590 standard, but above that requires labelling at the pumps - I note that (even) BP Ultimate is labelled as "contains up to 7% biodiesel" up here.
Supposedly all modern diesel engines are fine on the 5% blend, but they are talking about properly refined biodiesel, not 5% used chip fat! I suspect the warnings on the filler cap are there because you can find 100% biodiesel pumps in the EU, and that will most likely eventually knacker the fuel pump and/or injectors. |

I think you'll find they're all the same now, perhaps with minor differences in labelling at the pumps: For example, this is Volkswagen's Biodiesel advice. EN590 (the diesel road fuel specification) was revised AGAIN in 2009 to allow 7% biofuel content. See the SMMT statement and the amendment to pump labelling legislation.
Confoozing, innit!? |
