MIRO WHEELS and POTHOLES!!! BEWARE!!!

!!!TO ALL WHO HAVE mIRO WHEELS OR ARE THINKING ABOUT BUYING THEM!!

BEWARE OF RUNNING OVER POTHOLES!! My 14 month old wheel has a 270 degree crack around the inside thanks to a huge crater created by the recent freezing temperatures!!!

The tire, amazingly, is unscathed!!! rubber wins over aluminum!!!

Merrit Parkway: 1
Miro Wheel: 0
Dunlop Wintersport 3D: unscathed

The incident occurred on 2/12/11 -- time of expiration for wheel was roughly 10:30pm. A combination of low visibility and lane changing prevented the operator from sighting said crater and thus avoiding the incident. Miro wheel is survived by 3 other Miro wheels, who although grieving are glad they weren't the ones who hit the crater.

Services for Miro wheel were held at the Firestone in Hamden, CT, where the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D Tire was extracted by use of the jaws of life (AKA tire remover).

Obligatory pictures of carnage (warning strong automotive content):

Since Miro graciously decided to stop making a 18x8.5 +35, I am procuring 2 18x9 +37s (wouldn't want to have an 8.5 / 9 combo in the back, right?). Hopefully those will arrive soon as it is F-ing COLD here in CT and I am relegated to using stock RFTs.

What shit.

That is all.

Ya can't really blame Miro :P. This same thing happened to my friend's OEM wheels when he hit a crater. This shit would happen to any wheel if the hole was bad enough.

Reminds me of a Breyton wheel photo I saw once, or maybe it was twice. In any event, I have come to the conclusion from reading two recent posts on these wheels that they are some of the biggest pieces of shit wheels out there. Sure are nice look'n though.

Holy crap!

This doesn't make me feel very good as I just bought a set of 17" 225/45/R17 winters!

On a sidenote: Dude how out of balanced was your wheel?!?!?!?!?! You think somehow that had to do with it and maybe your rim was defective from the start?

Just a side note here.

Holy crap just how much weight did it take to balance out that wheel?

Something wrong there. Got enough weight there to sink a small ship.

Would have been interesting to see whether the installer attempted to balance out that wheel by repositioning the tire on that rim to improve the balance before they stuck on the 3 lbs. of weights. Awful job.

Another question is, are these wheels manufactured with such poor quality controls that they are inherently that far out of balance to begin with?

New England and potholes are synonymous.

Sorry, didn't read your response till after I posted mine. Defective was a word that occurred to me as well.

Thanks guys for all the condolences. I'll pass them on to the surviving members of the family...

No noticeable damage other than the deceased wheel. Alignment is horribly out of spec though, that was confirmed by throwing the car on the alignment rack last night. Car pulls left when I get on the gas and it's *not* due to the 300 ft-lb of torque...

Good attention to detail. You guys noticed all the wheel weights. Miro wheel (may it rest in peace) was made with a serious manufacturing defect, as such no matter how much effort was put into getting the wheel to balance out, no avail. Vibration was felt slightly at speeds about 70mph. Miro wheel was a replacement wheel, since when I put in my original order, one of the wheels had a small gash across two of the spokes. That got sent back, and I got a nice-looking, defective Miro wheel. Due to cold temps at the time, didn't want to bother going through another return process.

On a sidenote: for the NE, this has been a really crappy winter. So many potholes in the Bronx it looks like the dark side of the moon. Drove back from LI yesterday and saw no less than two disabled vehicles whose tires had literally rolled OFF the rim.

Update: Connecticut DOT has deigned to patch the crater that killed Miro wheel. Through Miro wheel's sacrifice, other wheels will be saved. RIP Miro wheel. That is all.

No wheel should crack like that, they are suppose to bend first and when they get to a certain point they crack, that is just bad quality, some like that happened to me with a set of Status wheels, the thing is that some casts are like honeycombs on the inside and makes them like a cookie and as soon as they hit something they crack
