replacing airbags

So, my brother hit a curb in his 325i, and his side airbag and side curtain airbag went off. Does anyone know if I can replace these myself easily or do I have to take it to a shop. Most importantly, do I have to go through a dealer? because the car is not under warranty anymore.

You don't have to go through the dealer but you need a shop that has a tool to reset the airbag warning lights.

Autologic, GT1, Bav Tool, etc.

Not sure about installation.

You have to bring it to a shop most airbags are held in with a certain kind of rivet that I think only certified shops can get. Never can be to safe when it comes to your life.

If the airbags blew you might have to replace the seat belt pre-tensioners!

The cost to fix this is going to blow your mind not including other damage to the car.

you can replace them yourself if you want-though the code will need to obv be cleared. That being said-its not so simple to replace the curtain bag and side airbag-when the curtain bag blows it usually damages the headliner and pillar trim. When the side bag blows it usually damages the seat leather and possibly the pillar trim and door panel. Also-check the rear seat belt pyrotechnics as they will typically blow in an accident also. Since i assume the car still runs and drives the BST likely didnt blow off..
