The word: Fitment
Hi all,
So this may sound crazy, but i was talking about car parts with my girlfriend and told her aobut the fitment of parts. She looked at me like i had 2 heads and thought i was crazy. She said... "Fitment, what is that??". I responded, "Fitment - how well some fits. Its kinda of judgement - how you judge something" She looks at me and laughs and starts to tell me that Fitment is not a word. We started to argue and then went to dictionary.com and i was suprised: And there i was standing in disbelief, she was right (again) and i was wrong. Moral of the story, we are all using the wrong word. |

It depends on which dictionary you decide to give your power away to.
If you use this one: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/fitment fitment [ˈfɪtmənt] n 1. (Engineering / Mechanical Engineering) Machinery an accessory attached to an assembly of parts 2. (Fine Arts & Visual Arts / Furniture) Chiefly Brit a detachable part of the furnishings of a room Our parts can definitely fit into #1. Out of curiosity, how was she right and you wrong (again) when she said fitment is not a word, yet clearly it is. |

The definition is still a noun though. People on the forums are using it as an adverb(?), which is incorrect according to that dictionary. |

well it is a word, but we arent using the correct word. We are using a noun, not a adverb.

Yea I noticed this the other day because apple products will autocorrect fitment....I does this on my iPhone and iPad.
Autocorrect also does this for ^no....it puts that damn arrow there unless I press the little "x". Anyone know how to reset the dictionary for autocorrect? |

Where does an adverb factor in at all? Both of the definitions posted are nouns.
When we say fitment in car terms, "how is the fitment of the piece," we mean its "fit-ability." If we used an adverb we would have to say "does the piece sit fitly," or some equivalent. Whether or not "fitment" as we use it is a word, using a noun form of the word is correct in our context. |
