A few buying Questions

Hi All,

I'm looking to possibly buy a CPO 328xi in a few weeks and after reading the wealth of information on this great site, I'm hoping that you experts could give some insight to any of the following:

1. What do you think is a fair price range (US $) for either a 2007 or 2008 with Sport, Premium, and Cold Weather package (no nav system) w leather seats (not sure if leather is included in one of the packages-my apologies if it is) with no more that 30,000 miles?

2. What resources (like KBB) do you feel are most accurate in helping to determine a fair price?

3. Any tricks/suggestions for haggling and/or getting better warranties, etc. when buying from a BMW dealer since I have no experience with CPO, etc. Is there a way for me to put a monetary value on what the warranty costs me into the price of the car? In other words, how much does it cost the dealer so I can understand what his bottom line is, etc.

As you can probably tell, I'm a bit new to both BMW and the CPO thing and value all of your opinions.

Thanks very much for any input.

Ray

From a dealer in CT, you're looking at around $27-$32k depending upon options/mileage.

1) My 08 was $23k from a private dealership that sells cars from auction. I have all options but sport / comfort access ... and it's an auto.

2) I used all the online car pricing sites, but it's hard to gauge because of our location in CT. Everything for these cars just seems more expensive around here.

3) Can't help you there, as my car came from an independent dealer.

Thanks for your response.

One last question for anyone: When I look at the KBB price for a CPO car (obviously from a dealer) the price is $29,575 (for a car with 30,000miles). The exact same car/options from a private seller is listed at $25,775. That's a difference of $3800 which to me seems like a lot of money for a warranty. I don't want to touch one of these cars without a warranty (just got burned on an old Mercedes) but was wondering if I'm missing something here in the equation or what the smart thing to do would be.

Any thoughts much appreciate. Thanks.

Around here (St Louis) any 07-08 328 Coupe CPO was going for around $28K with 25-35K miles. I ended up finding a 2010 demo 328xi coupe with 4300 miles that I pick up tomorrow for $33,400.

Don't forget you'll likely have the factory warrant remaining on the car -- even for non-cpo. For example, mine is not CPO'd, but I am covered until November of this year. Check out the build date on any car you look at. You get 4 years from the build date and/or 50k miles. You can then buy the warranty from the dealership afterwards. Depending upon coverage levels, it can run up to $3500 or so.

I believe that the warranty period begins when you take delivery... not on the build date. Am I mistaken? My car was built in April 2010, but it sat in a dealership lot until I bought it in August.

Sorry, you're right. It's on the date of the first retail sale. So, yours would be August.

If you're looking for a xi it's actually pretty hard to find, at least near the Atlanta GA area. I don't see a lot of them out there and autotrader only shows 2 to 3 328xi for sale within 100 miles! I would think a 07 to 08 CPO car would be a bit less, but maybe because of the xi you pay a bit more.

In California, they rarely offer the xi because of the demand rate. In my case on the other hand, I purchased my fully loaded immaculate condition 2008 E92 328i (idrive, sports package, non m-tech, blue-tooth, etc.) with only 25,000 miles for only 22,000 out the door. Depending on what location, dealer, or condition of the car, it will determine the value of the car.
