Widest possible tire?

I don't know how tires work very well, so I was wondering what the maximum safe tire size I could get on my 17x8 wheels.

235's?

I recommend you use Google once in a while like asking

Maximum Tire Size

then you get helpful feedback like this

CLICK

or check with your dealer.

Also do try to use the table above from TireRack enter your wheel size and existing tire then play with the tire size it will give you clearances etc. Still someone here from Tire Rack will most likely give you the widest tire you can run on your car. The fellows from Tire Rack are very helpful.

The final decision will be yours. Depending on what car you drive adjustments may be required on your Speedo or you may even need to have your fenders rolled so that the tires do not touch and rub. Your best source of information would be your dealer or someone from TireRack.

Hope you find what you seek

Thanks for the advice, but all online tire selectors will give me 225/45 which I already know since that's what came from the factory, and the table doesn't tell me how big the tire can be without being unsafe. Dealer will suggest the same as it's probably a safety issue to recommend anything higher. I believe these kind of judgement are best made by people with experience hence why I posted instead of settling for my own conclusions.

This is the widest I would recommend on a 8.0" wide wheel as well.

Did either of you guys have handling issues with such a wide contact patch? I'm afraid of over or under inflation and sloppy handling from the bulging sidewalls.

I would not recommend anything over a 235/40/17. A 245 on a 8.0" might cause excessive bulging and cause the car to feel "loose". A 235 will be wide enough for additional traction and will not deteriorate the suspension dynamics.
