Mods & Insurance madness...

Unbelievable.

Just called up my insurance company to ask about mods and the extra insurance cost. I'm left pretty floored by the response.

I asked about changing my grills and adding a lip spoiler. Each of these mods costs well under £100.

Change to the insurance:

£176 + an excess increase to £850 (an extra £200)

I then asked what would happen if I went ahead without changing the policy in the hopes that it would be a case just the mods not being covered but nope, policy would be null and void

The problem is insurance companies are always looking for ways to avoid paying out. Undeclared mods (no matter how minor) is just begging to get shafted...without lube.

Why bother declaring such "mods" to your insurance company?

Do you declare to your insurance when you buy new car mats, or seat covers?

I think Will was being serious in this case.

As both the lip spoiler and grills can be OEM parts and fitted on a AUC car you could well have bought the car with these items already fitted and not known they were not factory fitted.

My car came with them already on and I had no idea!

Fair enough.

I would think seat covers and matts are considered accessories not mods. Personally? I'm not willing to take the risk of potentially being uninsured in the event of an accident.

Insurance companies are wankers. They'll use ANY excuse to not pay up. If you get an assessor who clocks onto the mods then what do you do when they tell your policy is void?

Maybe I worry too much...

I remember that my mate put tinted windows on his car, and then a few months later, his car got key scratched all over, and when the assessor came over from the insurance company to inspect the car, he was told the car is not covered, as he did not declare the tinted windows and his policy became invalid.

Insurance companies have gone mad in the last 12 months. Taking any opportunity to increase cost n generally anti mod.

I'm soon to get down pipes & forge intercooler and am really twichy about tryin to get cover for these. Most will flat refuse and the few that don't will prob wanna double / tripple my policy!!

Thing is to lift the bonnet it would look completley standard. It's a 56 plate and I've only had it for 12 months. As previous post, who's to say they not on the car when i bought it!!

Really don't know what to do.

Yeah. When we got burgled. I felt like we were the ones being treated as suspects by the insurance company.

They wanted "proof of purchase" for virtually everything we claimed for. Even when provided with those the cheeky fuckers wanted to give us vouchers for most of the stuff!

Wow, that is crazy. It must vary a lot though, 'cos my remap + aftermarket exhaust (backbox) cost me an extra........£46.50.

This was from Admiral, and I have got several millenia of no claims and am an old git etc. etc. So it must just depend on what risk category their system dumps you into. Doesn't make it right though.

Mike.

Will give them a go when it's renewal time. Although I think Chris Knott are also on my "first port of call" list.

I know they have changed some of their policies since I started with them, like they will only cover a remap/box with upto 20hp gain.
