Do I have to change brake fluid?
Hi,
So..last time I visited my dealer, they suggested me to change brake fluid and engine oil. Right after I came back from the dealer, I went three body shop in my town. They all said I don't have to change brake fluid. I was confused because three of them told me not to change it. Do I really need to change brake fluid? |

If you are out of warranty you do not need to do anything. Just put gas in it and drive. No oil changes, no fluid changes, freak it.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

If you are no longer under the maintenance warranty, then feel free to have it done at a reputable indy BMW shop. It will probably cost less. Quote:
I'm sorry to say, but I think you deserved some of the comments you received. Why would the fact that you're out of warranty negate the need for this service? Vehicle maintenance still needs to be done, whether it's for brake fluid, oil changes, wiper blades, microfilter, etc. That doesn't change now that it's up to you to pay for it.

BMW requires a brake fluid change every two years beginning with the production date. The easiest way to do expensive damage to you brake system is to not get your brake fluid changed on schedule. OP - I'd stay very far away from that body shop when it comes to mechanical advice. |

All it takes is to drive the cost of a brake job into 4digit area is for the caliper pistons to get rust from moisture that has condensed out in brake fluid. You change the fluid at 2 to 3 year intervals and you can only have to expect new pads and rotors in the list of parts.
A little less than a new kanuter valve but more than muffler bearings.

I just did a brake flush last week. If you're out of warranty, I recommend 2 qts of Motul RBF-600 (~$20/qt). If you're savvy enuf to be on this forum, no reason not to spend a lil bit more for such an important part of your car, even if the standard brake fluid is prob fine.
I was quoted $100 for labor on flush only, but my actualy cost was different as I replaced rotors, pads, and upgraded to stainless steel lines.

Dinan service charges $99 flat rate. Or at least they did the last time I went.

2 years is what BMW recommends when it's their dime, old school maintenance is every year.

This has nothing to do with included maintenance. |
