Hey guys/girls

My Focus RS Might be gone this weekend so its time to get serious on the hunt for a 320d m Sport

Just a few questions please

How often should they be serviced? And to what cost? (Independents vs BMW)

What sort of things should i look out for on an E90 320d M Sport?

Id be looking at a car with hopefully less then 60k miles

These cars run on condition based servicing so they tell you when they are ready depending on how you drive etc. Generally though many people change their oil earlier than the car states because the intervals tend to be quite long.

Mpg is only good on the 320d if you do long distances and are at motorway cruising speeds. Stop start town driving running short distances from cold sends mpg down to low 30s and in cold temps into the mid 20s.

Dealers tend to overcharge on servicing but if you shop around prices vary wildly between dealers and you can play them off one another. Indys do the same job but 60% cheaper on average as dealers average £120 an hour, Indys £40.

Mine does 600 miles from a tank and that's motorway and pottering about. If it's not in warranty stay clear of the stealers. Just had mine serviced and rear pads fitted for £300 at a local garage. Stealers wanted £250 just for the pads

Ah yeah i did wonder if that was the case, very clever stuff. Can you give me a rough indication thought, 10k? 15k?

Yeah done a bit of reading into economy and that did worry me to be fair. Im getting 200miles to just below 45s litres at around £55 worth of super in my car, not good!

How much to fill a 320d roughly?

Indys at £40 seems very good, i got charged £35/hour at your normal run of the mill garage just the other day!

I have a lovely 330d sport going up for sale soon if interested. High spec, only slightly worse mpg then a 320d with loads more torque and power. Let me know.

My 320d had its first service at 18k, now at 25k & it's claiming another 12k miles to the next one, per mile comes out cheaper than my Focus TDCi which it replaced. Fuel tank is 55l iirc, on a motorway run with cruise on at 70-80 I get over 600 miles out of a tank, however town driving etc.. brings that down, solid town driving & I'll get nearer 400 miles out of a tank.

I've just filled mine with shell v power diesel from the bottom to the top and it cost me £84 at £1.39 per litre. Doing the maths on that means the car has a 60 litre tank.

Serving is around every 15k miles roughly but it all depends on how it's driven, it may tell you every 20k miles or two years but I'd never leave oil in that long anyway.

I remember my R32, it wasn't bad on fuel it averaged 28 mpg most days but because of the engine I wanted to drive it more. Cost me around £280 a month on fuel, the 320d is around £120 but I do a lot less miles in it.

Forgot to add, no money to be spent, it's had a recent service, Inc, brakes discs, pads and air filter. Pro nav with latest 2011 maps with speed camera, heated leather.......

Like the idea of the long distance capabilitys, hoping to get on the road alot this year for shows etc

Yeah thats another thing im thinking of, with 340bhp on tap its EXTREMELY hard to drive it steady to achieve the 22mpg i achieved over 2 weeks!

I figure it would be alot easier (and comfortable) to achieve 30-50mpg in a 320d without having that temptation!

47mpg in 36000 miles. 1 oil service 1 brake fluid service, and still 4k to the next oil service.

Pros;

£125 road tax

Insurance not too bad

177bhp is still a very fast car compared to most others on the road

Servicing, expensive at dealers, but big gaps between them

Prestige image

Very solid car - again compared to most others on the road

Good seats (M-sport) and interior build quality

Very smooth engine at motorway speeds

Capable of mid-50's mpg when motorway cruising (slowish)

Cons;

M-sport suspension on bad roads

Run flat tyres - cost, ride, longevity, handling

To be honest i dont think the servicing is expensive.

My car was recently in for most bits... oil change + filter, microfilter, vehicle check which all in was £250.

My oil is not due for another 2 years based on my mileage. Vehicle check isn't due for another 3 years (unless it's time limited).

My brake fluid is due soon but thats fairly cheap. Discs and pads are a little more but i bought a fairly expensive, pretty rapid car, i expect the brakes to be slightly more expensive than a hatchback!

Overall, it's worked out at £125 per year. That's cheaper than my Mrs Rav4 which needs a yearly service. Probably cheaper or similar to a lot of modern hatchbacks too.
