Rumor has it that the new 4 cylinder turbo going into the X1 xDrive28i will be good for 245 horsepower and approx. 250 lb/ft of torque, which would be a HUGE improvement over the base inline 6 in the current 328 & 128

Well it's no surprise that BMW is finally bringing back the 4cyl's. I think they have strategically released bits of information over the past year to get us all ready for it. What I am curious about now is how the 4cyl models will slot in with the I-6 models in terms of price and performance.

Will a 4cyl F30 have cloth seats as an option to help lower the cost and differentiate it from it's I-6 sibling?

Also since those numbers are accurate it places the performance above the NA I-6 offered today if I recall correctly. Isn't it now 230 Hp and 200 lb/Tq? (Edit) I did not see the official post about the new X1 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8715451

Also those numbers (245 hp and 258 Tq) place it closer to 335 range. Will they now have to rate the 335 closer to the actual HP it produces as we know it is generally underrated now?

4 cylinder twin scroll turbo in a LIGHTER 1 or 3 coupe has me feeling could be my next car.

I don't think that BMW will ever offer a car with cloth interior...it will likely still be the leatherette and leather options available now. With that said, I think it goes without saying that the output will be increased for the 335 into 335is territory, thus leaving the gap between the F30 328 and 335 fairly close to what it is currently. I see all models gaining bluetooth phone technology and an in-dash audio/hvac/nav screen like the new X3 and F10 regardless of whether the vehicle is equipped with navigation or not.

if this makes the car lighter, im all for it! the engine can probably easily be pushed to 300rwhp, which is plenty for the street.

And yeah, the other motors are okay too.

Don't forget, BMW became famous with its classic 2002 Turbo, and has recent form - the 3.0-litre turbo'd six won at the International Engine of the Year awards.

I would much rather have the new 2.0t than my n52.

For me, BMW is about the engine (smooth delivery, great note, pulls hard through the band) and the handling of the vehicle. As long as those constants remain for me I don't care what is under the hood. That being said, I've yet to hear a 4 cyl that sounds or feels like my inline NA 6 ---- I'm not holding my breath.

However, for years BMW achieved great things with 4 bangers ---2002 tii and initial M3 E30 --- so performance and handling with a 4 cyl are possible --- but they will of course need to focus on weight. I have to believe they have a great product. This will be interesting to us in the US who haven't seen a 4 cyl BMW for some time and are quite accustomed to 6 and 8 cyl motors.

+1

The 318ti was a failure for BMW in the US. Americans also hate hatchbacks, hence the coupe 135i.

I need to hear the 4 cyl turbo before I can pass judgment, but I hope it sounds great.
