Taking your own oil in for service
I'm going in for my car's first service (since I bought it second hand, it's done 32,000 on the clock) and I was wondering if garages don't mind you taking your own oil in for the service?
I've read people doing it on here and it seems to save some money so I'm thinking I may as well. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165581 Is the right stuff for my 2007 320M Sport Conv? Seems to be the cheapest place I can find. |

Hi mate, thats exactly what im doing tomorrow..got the M3 booked in for oil change in the morning. Told them I will be bringing my own oil. That's fine with them. They charge you for 2 things - oil and labour. They will just knock of the oil price. However it must be the same oil they use.

I've done it, no big issue, they even put what's left back in the boot.
Got mine from here:- http://www.opieoils.co.uk/ Hassle free...

Check with the dealer first but most don't bother if you bring your own. Those that do allow it do ask that it matches the manufacturer specification but the brand of oil doesn't really matter.
Specifically ask that they return any unsued oil as once they actually forgot to put the 3 litres of oil that wasn't used back into the boot. Thankfully it was sat near the bin waiting to be tipped out and I got it back. |

Call me cynical, but garages have proven time and time again they just cannot be trusted. Evidence all over every car forum, and in person.

Multiple threads going. Yes most dealers won't mind you supplying the oil. The oil for your car should be 5w30 Castrol Edge/Edge Sport if you're buying from Halfords. It doesn't have to be the same brand, but needs to be a good specification BMW Long Life Oil. If you're considering Sytner BMW then PM Anneka for a price with you supplying the oil. Me and Wafik have, and several others have done so without issues. I just posted a similar reply in another thread in the Technical section. |

Just to confirm what others are saying, most will allow you to supply your own oil as long as it is of correct spec.
Wafik, where did you get yours done? I used Sytner Chigwell just before Christmas for mine. |

He's going to Harold Wood, I bumper into him not long ago.
toxicnerve - cool, so you went for it in the end. Had a full service on the M3 at Chigwell just before the winter. Just seen Halfords doing cheap oil so may get another interim oil change next week. |

Shouldn't be a problem for a reputable dealer. Comma Syner Z (5W30) should do at about £36 for 5 litres. As long as it covers the required specs (LL04 I think it is) - altho M engines different - used to be Mobil 1 - not sure what they use now!
Don't know why they don't charge a much more realistic price for their own oil given that they buy it in a sodding great big drum and probably pay £5 a litre! Last edited by G82Dude; 01-17-2011 at 06:18 PM.. |

I recall Sytner Chigwell were also slightly cheaper if not the same as Birds. Oh, by the way the recent circa £119 quotes seen on the forum are for oil service only. As long as it says LL04 on the bottle then BMW can't say jack. Even if Asda did there own brand of LL04 Chip Fat then that would have to be OK to BMW.
BTW. My (best in the north west ex senior BMW tech) indy charges £20 for an oil / filter / microfilter change (1/2 hour) plus parts. No good looking girls or free danish pastries on reception though But at BMW, if it's £20 for the oil change and £100 more for the pastries, i'll just go to Greggs instead |

Most dealers wouldn't mind you bringing your own oil, we certainly don't.
Wafik, I hope all goes smoothly today, if you require any assistance let me know Further to what has been said on the other thread in the technical section, readers please kindly note that this service included the oil sevice (with customer supplied oil), micro filter change and brake fluid service. |

That's me back in the dealers at service time! Although I just remember, I did buy the indy mechanic a bacon butty last time I was in, so you can add £2 to the £20 oil change. |
