Stupid mistake

I am so ashamed of myself. If someone I knew did this, I would laugh my ass off....

Just went from a manual E90 to an auto E92 last week, and this is how spaced out I am driving an automatic.

I am having a part this weekend so went to go pick up rental glassware, etc.. at a local event supply/catering company. I pulled up to the loading area, leave the car running, go inside, pay my bill and wait for the warehouse guy to load the stuff in my car....

The guy pops his head in the car to put stuff in the back and says "nice car, but why is your car in drive?"

Turns out I left the car running, in D, but with the handbrake on.

Ya, lame story, but I can't believe I did that!

Yeah, seems like this might happen a few times for you initially as you adjust. Atleast the hand brake held well... you wouldn't want it just rolling off...

Ooooooohhhhh... Blerg! I was just slammed by a fellow Canadian. Just a reminder D also stands for Douchebag

D, in my case, stands for "Definitely tired of Toronto traffic" which is why I opted for the Auto this time. When I lived in rural Eastern Ontario (AKA Ottawa) I had xDrive for the snow and manual because traffic is minimal. When I moved back to the most important place in Canada, I decided I didnt need an AWD and couldn't tolerate hoping along in 1st and 2nd gear and ridding the clutch.

I learned to drive on a stick. The first time I drove an auto, I was moving a relative's car out of the driveway to make room for another car. I absent-mindedly put my left foot down and felt a pedal. It was the wide brake pedal. I gave it some gas as I let out the clutch. Only, it wasn't the clutch....it was the brake. Left a couple of nice skid marks across the gravel driveway LOL. Funny I could drive stick fine, but not auto

The first time my brother got into a car back in 1986, he was moving it into the garage for my uncle who had a few too many. It was a new 1986 Toyota Cressida. He got in, put his foot on the brake, put the car in D and lifted on the pedal. The car moved forward quicker than he thought and he slammed on the gas in error. Squealed the tires and drive into the garage. Totalled a new Honda lawn mower, a bike, and totally messed up the front end and front left fender. Learned his lesson!

I would probably do the same thing if I tried to drive an auto. I firmly believe cars shouldn't move forward without any human intervention. I always read about some poor person who runs themselves over in a atm/fastfood drive-thru.

Happened here in Toronto a few weeks back... Woman opened the door to insert a parking stub, but the car was in drive. The car rolled forward and caught her in with the open door. She died. Stupid error but very sad. I think her kids were even in the car!

I'm sure I would do this too. Don't feel bad. Impressive hand brake though

Why would the guy know the car were in D? That implies he either went inside or was snooping?

Were I to have done that here in DC, by the time I or the warehouse person got outside to put the stuff in the car, the car would have been gone already!

It's nice that you live in an area where doing such a thing won't get your car stolen.

came from a Mustang GT to my AT BMW.... was coasting up to a stop (spacing out, maybe looking down at radio or phone) and went to push in the clutch, only problem is I was going about 15mph or so and it was actually the brake. Good thing I had my seatbelt on, or I'd be through the windshield...lol

why not? I personally like it better. AT suits my driving style just fine for now. My car is a commuter/daily driver, and not having to shift means easier drinking of coffee, not much of a pain in the ass in traffic.

If I want to manually shift something on the race track or in the twisties, I'll don my leathers and toss a leg over my Ducati.

I did this once also. Luckily, it was in a safe position even if it would have moved... Live and learn.
