Squeaky suspension?

I recently noticed that my front suspension squeeks when I go over bumps at both low and high speed. I tested this further by standing on the sill of my car and make the car move up and down. The squeeking is quite apparant and comes from the front suspension area. Does this mean time to replace shocks or could it be another culprit?

Car has about 48K miles on it so I'll probably bring it into the dealership to have it checked out.

Does weather have anything to do with it? Have you replaced your sway bar and/or sway bar bushings? Is it a squeak or a creak?

not sure what the diff between squeek and creak is haha. It did happen when I was going to Vegas and it was about 35 degrees outside so that may be the culprit. Bushings were not replaced as of yet..

I just notice that I am having the same issue you're having also. When I go over a bump, sounds like a loud squeek.

Struts usually do not squeak unless they are very very old. I ride on 150,000+ mile Honda struts in below 30 degree weather daily with no noises or issues. Cold weather usually causes rubber to squeak/creak a lot, most typically in the sway bar bushing. Lithium grease can help fix this but graphite lubricant is a better fix.

Next time it is cold out get one side of the car to flex a bit but either slightly jacking it up or driving up a small curb/incline. If it does squeak it is probably your sway bar not being able to turn in the bushing. Simply loosen the sway bar, apply graphite lubricant ($1.75 at auto store) and the sound should go away. Otherwise dunno what to tell you

best of luck!

My front suspension makes noise over speed bumps. Only drivers side and only noticeable over speed bumps. I have 44k. Doesnt bother me but will get it fixed soon.

Oh god I forgot to mention if you do the sway bar removal like I said please make sure the car is on a flat surface. You could end up in the hospital if you don't.

i'm experiencing the same thing! It's not a squeek though. I'm getting a clunking sound and its rather annoying. my mileage is about the same too. The car's at the dealer and this seems to be happening more and more often now that i'm reading about it. Same symptoms though!

1) Low speed ONLY
2) over rough surfaces
3) I stood on the door sill and bounced on the driver side, it's there!
4) The car's at the dealer and i told them to check it out. will report back by tuesday.
5) I got under the car, the suspension has the right tolerances and clearance. Bushing failure that quickly? It was common with the lower control arms on my old E46M but you'd think it's better by now?

i'm thinking it is more than likely the cold weather and the bushings need lubrication. I'm going to bring my car in before my 50K miles are up. Report in what you find out from the dealer...should be interesting to hear what they ahve to say

Clunking sound sounds like a sway bar link or bushing on the link. I'm not sure how the BMW links are designed. Does the car handle like shit lately? It probably is only at low speeds because you cant hear it at high speeds

My car was at the dealer last week for routine 30k miles maintenance. I noted to my SA that my car squeaked over speed bumps (on the right side only) when cold. They checked it out and said nothing was wrong ... just needed the lubrication to warm up.

FWIW, car is perfectly balanced and aligned, and I don't notice anything wrong with car.

well in my case its VERY loud when cold and after car warms up, the sound is not as loud but its still there...only on drivers front side.

EDIT: WAS AT DEALER, THEY ONLY LUBRICATED SUSPENSION BUSHINGS. NOISE IS STILL THERE BUT MUCH QUIETER. GOOD FOR NOW.

So just replace the bushing? What does a bushing do for a car?

I haven't gone in yet. at 48.8K miles right now so will go in during the next month. Since its been in the low 70s during the day here in socal i haven't heard the squeek anymore except early in the morning when I first leave for work. It probably is just lubricating the bushings... I'll update once I get to dealer..
