14 miles and 17 long minutes to warm to 230 degrees.

It's painful to wait this long to start to spin those twin turbos. So sad, I wish this thing would heat up quickly so I can get on it. Anyway, it was around those figures says my trip computer, at 3 minutes of city driving, and 14 minutes of highway driving at 65 mph. PLUS, my car is always garaged, and it's only about 55-60 degrees outside

I can only assume this is completely normal. I feel for you fella's that live back east or up north, it must take forever!

highway driving @ 65mph won't do much to warm up your engine. All that cold 55 degree air coming in and low revs as you cruise in top gear

As my wife says - "That is why I have heated seats, a heated steering wheel and a fur coat" since I lack the latter two, the dog gets to ride with me on cold days.

It's a bummer, I must say. Even worse, I only work 6 miles away from work. When I drive home, park it in the garage, and then drive back when lunch is over, I'll maybe get to the 190 mark. So even then, I choose not to get on it. Ironinc that I wish my commute was longer...

Engine goes into close loop around 180 degrees, theres no reason to wait til your oil reaches 230 to get on it. 5-10 mins of normal driving should be plenty to put the hammer down.

I drive about 10 miles to work. Mostly highway. Sometimes I just take the scenic route if I wanna drop the hammer.

Once the needle starts to move it seems to go faster...it just takes forever to get past the 160 mark. I usually wait till its 180-200 to get on it. At that point one full throttle pull puts it up above 220 anyway.

Usually wait till 200 degrees to go over 3k RPMs. 230 is kind of overkill I think.

Good to see others that warm their car before flooring it. I have a neighbor that has a modded 335i and he floors it straight from his house on a cold day, he's kind of a tool though, always trying to brag about what cars he can take and how he can roll with Lambos and such. He seems the type that would run his car into the ground in 2 years and then buy a new one.

my car is pretty much good to go (180 degrees) after 10 minutes of stop and go driving from my house on the way to manhattan. always kept under 2500 and very light on the throttle

gonna be 10 degrees tomorrow when I leave at 630am. basically as i'm pulling into the parking lot 5 miles and 7-10 minutes later I get to blast some heat before I brave the cold again. I really would like remote start. that would be nice. spring can't come soon enough.

this time a year, my car never breaks 160 on my three miles to work. During the summer, its about 180-200.

After the needle moves, ur safe to go up in the RPMs, i generally wait till 200+ before I will take it above 5.5k

I'd love it if my car didn't have time to warm up on my way to work. I've got a 40 mile commute and it also takes my car almost half that to warm up to operating temp.

I think all of us are used to looking at a coolant gauge, which warms up much quicker than the engine oil. I'm guessing having an oil cooler doesn't help either, especially on mornings like today where it was 24* during my entire drive in. In this weather, the oil barely gets above 210 and sometimes doesn't even reach that mark.

I think operating temp is lower than our gauge would have us believe. Unless you really get on it after 5-10 mins, highway driving with low revs in the cold won't get the needle to midpoint which is fine (in my opinion the needle midpoint is quite warm, i would place normal temp under the midpoint).

I'm new to turbo engines, so this thread is interesting for me. Where does it say that the operating temp needs to be at 230F (or at 200F, or whatever) before driving agressively? I can certainly understand that you want the oil up to a reasonable temperature, but I see nothing in the owners manual about a specific temperature. I would think that as long as heater or defroster is able to blow warm air that it would be warm enough - so perhaps 2-3 minutres on a really cold day under typical driving conditions?

The manual says to wait til about 210F, though once it's at 180 or so oil should be circulating normally.
