I don't like the Navi + a couple other questions.
So I bought a CPO 08 335i yestrrday. Last car I had was an 04 TSX w/ Nav. I love that Acura Nav, it's so easy to use. Dont get me wrong, the 335i is a much better car then the TSX, but the more I play with the BMW Nav, the less I like it.
I have a few questions, I'm a BMW noob so pls bear w/ me. 1) How do I cancel a set course? I didnt find a way to cancel a set course short of deleting the destination list. 2) Can I look up business names like Target, Shell, WFB ATM, etc? I didnt see that option and its annoying searcing by addresses all the time. What if i I dont know the address. 3) My wife has the spare key. I didnt realize each key has its own iDrive settings. Is there a way to port my settings to hers? ie: radio stations, etc. 4) Also what if we sit in the car together and both keys are in the car? Which one will it recognize? 5) I had to set the time and date myself, is this normal? Doesnt the nav pick up signals from a satellite or something. I never had to set the time in the TSX. 6) Can I set it so the map is on the whole screen? I had a couple more, but I cant remember so they must have been small. Thx, Steve Last edited by STC; 01-05-2011 at 02:28 AM.. |

1) In the map display screen, get to the column of icons on the far left. Scroll to the one that looks like an arrow pointing to a dot. Push down on the knob to select. It should now have a slash through it. OR push the voice activation button, wait for beep, and say "stop guidance".
2) If you are in the navigation module but not on map display, goto the very top row and scroll to Information. Select on destination or on location. Then you have to narrow down by category before you can search by name. If you are on the map display, you can also get to POI search by going to the very left column and selecting the "i" icon. 3) Not that I know of. Maybe the dealer can do it, but otherwise you have to do it manually. 4) Assuming you have comfort access, whichever key unlocked car or started the car last will be the one used. If you don't have comfort access, then obviously whichever key is in the dash is the one used. If you have CA and still stick a key into the dash, whichever key is in the dash is the one that will be used. 5) Normal 6) No

Thx man. Appreciate the quick response.
You helped me remember another question I had by your answer to question #2. - Can I look up a restaurant, shopping, gas, banks, etc by closest distance, city, etc. This is prob in "category". I'll keep playing around w/ it. |

As in just a list of places when you don't have a specific name you want to search?
If that's what you meant, then yes, you can just leave the name field blank and do a search.

Yep thats exactly what I meant.
One more question I just remembered. - On the map, can I have icons showing on it? Like ATM, Gas stations, hospitals, etc? I didnt see that option. |

Icons only show up after you do a POI search, and only for that category that you searched.

Now that i think about it, the iDrive is a POS.
I still love it, but a touchscreen would be soo much better, i imagine it would be great if it had a similar layout to Garmin navs. |

How many times do we have to say this. NAV is a function of I drive... It's NOT just a NAV system.
Pre LCI models have the previous Gen I-Drive, which is inferior to the newer one, so I can understant the title of this thread...to a point. The Current I-Drive with the combox and what's coming in the near future blows all the competition away IMHO. I won't get another BMW without I-Drive. http://www.bimmerfile.com/2010/12/28...nes-app-store/ Quote:

I'll go ahead and put this out there because I had an RL as my daily driver for the last 3 years and have now switched to BMW.
No matter how hard you try to love it, iDrive and the BMW Navigation interface will never be as good or as user-friendly as the Acura one is. The Acura system is one-of-a-kind and is the most intuitive system I've ever seen. |

Let me ask a simple question, can I use voice command to ask the nav to guide me to the next nearest popular name restaurant while driving on the highway? I can do this in my wife's MB, but not in my BMW yet.

For reliability, dependability, and consistency the Japanese brands still take the cake. For performance and driving experience the Germans win every time. In 36,000 miles I only had my RL in the shop for oil changes. My 335 seems to be in and out every 4-6 months. |

Actually I did read the manual. Maybe I missed it, but a lot of what I asked is not in the manual. |

There was your mistake..... Of course I'm rolling the dice myself on my next ride. I-Drive is standard and I'm STILL getting NAVI. No way am I going to have some 3d party crap retrofitted to the dash or suction cuppd to the windshield of an X6.

This past weekend, while driving through scenic La Jolla, a pre-facelift 335i with a ton of mods blows by our Hyundai Tucson loaded to the hilt with 3 adult passengers, 1 2.5 year old and all her associated gears, and enough luggage to last a weekend. Yet in the twisty part of the road, the 335i was so damn slow that I was afraid I'd rear end it if I kept driving at a moderate pace. The Tucson cost less than 1/2 the 335i, is bone stock, is carrying more passengers and luggage, at least 125 less HP, loaded to the hilt with features and options that are optional on the 335i, and would blow by the 335i in those same twisties had I not been afraid of the 335i in front losing control and hitting us. What is the point I'm trying to make you ask? On paper, the 335i is a far superior car to the Tucson. Yet 99.9% of the general populace can't drive the 335i to 1/2 of what it's capable of doing. So saying that the BMW is a superior car wrapped around the iDrive? Not quite so. It's only superior on paper. To 99.9% of the driving populace, the Acura is just as capable of handling 100% of their every day, and most cases, weekend fun driving as well. And the Acura is probably far more reliable.

The RL resolution is awful. I can draw a better map with an etch-a-sketch. Many of the features are not intuitive and the knob is in a horrible place. That said, the auto split screen is a nice feature but POI weren't well integrated either. There is no "along the route" display of POIs. Neither input is very good, but the '09 BMW is much better than earlier versions. |

Agreed that the TSX nav is better and simpler to use. I thought I would miss the touch screen ability in my TSX until I used the control in the BMW. Overall, the joystick is a lot safer to use when driving because you don't have to concentrate on physically punching the letters in on the screen. It is also in a more convenient location (don't have to reach your arm out to the center console). I don't think the nav in the BMW is bad though....just not as good as others.
