335i or Mercedes CLS55 AMG?
Just wanted to get some thoughts on the idea of selling my 07 335i Coupe and replacing it with a 06-07 Mercedes CLS 55 AMG. It is a much different car and from what I have found it seems to be pretty reliable. If anyone is familiar with them or has any info that would be greatly appreciated. They are called "four door coupes" and have some fun sounding numbers although they did not make it in a 6mt but it does have a 5.5 liter supercharged V8 engine which is good for about 469hp.
I am on the wall tryting to decide on this one.

I love that car, I have since it was first introduced. I've driven an E55 and an E63 AMG. I'm sure those cars perform similarly to the CLS55. They are basically luxurious muscle cars. They don't handle very well and feel heavy but they are supremely comfortable and are definately a very fun car to drive. They just are'nt as precise or driver focused as a comparable BMW and even more so compared to a 3 series. If your okay with that, I say go for it. I don't think you will be disappointed. Be certain of reliability though because Mercedes has had it's fair share of reliability woes.

I've driven my buddy's CLS63 AMG several times and those things are a beast and in an entirely different class than the 335i. Although he did not have any problems for the time he owned it (~ 2 years), insurance on it was expensive and it was a gas guzzler.
Also as someone earlier had mentioned, they are a little heavy and not as nimble when compared with the 335is, but the horsepower and the throaty V8 more than makes up for it. Good luck! |

In my opinion, it's sport versus luxury so it depends what you're looking for. I look at the 335 as more of a sporty vehicle whereas the CLS 55 is more of a cruising vehicle. That's just me, though. <shrug>

One of the coolest looking luxury sedans IMO. And then there's that AMG power... I say go for it. Is that white one the car your looking at? I dont think those silver linings around the tail lights are OEM

Mercs are lovely cars, and AMG's have formidable v8 motors. It's truly a premium touring sedan and looks fantastic too IMO. Merc also makes supremely comfortable and supportive seats you'll find compared to BMW. But due largely to the size and weight and autobox it won't feel as chuckable as a 3. And you may not care because will bring a different kind of driving satisfaction I suspect.

that thing will look sick with some black wheels. question, are you planning on tracking the car at all? if so, this might not be the best choice. but for riding in style, there are definitely a lot less of these on the road than BMW 3-series cars.
cousin of mine has one, i just recommend getting a warranty. my good friend is a merc mechanic, and most of them seem to have small problems that cost small fortunes to fix. cheers, get some good pics if you pick it up!

Did someone put chrome trim around the tail lights or is that stock? If it's the former, the car was owned by someone in the ghetto and you should probably check for traces of drugs before buying it. Just sayin'.
Also, what's with that huge ass gap between the fender and rocker panel... right in front of the door bottom? |

AMG's are beasts. My dad had a s65 and it was a monster. the v12 is different from the v8 but the power they have is amazing. AMG's are really expensive to fix as well. Tires for his S65 were 2400 for 4.

I absolutely love that ride!! That is what my wife wants right now. I had a 300c with the 5.7l hemi, and I actually looked at those and the 2006/2007 M5 (similar price range used) before I got my 335i but decided to go with the 335i because of its tuning potential and gas mileage. I needed to get some good fuel economy for a change before jumping back into a v8/v10.
If you can deal with the higher Fuel bill, I say go for it!! |
