cars been damaged

Went to visit friends on wed parked on the road. Left at 1.30 in the morning. After driving 20 yards or so I noticed the drivers wing mirror has been knocked in a bit immediately thought someone had caught it - sure we have all experienced this at some time or another with wing mirrors)

Anyway, got home 15 mins later & completely forgot to have a look ( kids tired etc, just wanted to get in etc)

Used the car yesterday, still didn't think to look.

Went into the garage tonight & it suddenly occurred to me to check the car & there is a a 3" diameter dint just below the wing mirror with a crease in it with white paint scuffed inside the dint.

99.99% sure the damaged was caused whilst visiting my friends on Wed (just so happens we are there tonight as well) & near where we parked was a driveway with a white van on it. It wasnt a scratch down the car it was quite clearly a side impact & could only have come from that driveway.

Going to knock on his door when we get there later & front him up & expecting a complete denial but can I call the police to investigate (seems trivial but being as I'm convinced when & where it happened & that his paint work is on my car I think I have a good case)

Going to check out his van for black paintwork & measure the height of his bumper against my dint etc......

Any advice guys ??????? like if it is him he left the scene of a crime (or something similar)

Police won't be interested.

Get photos of everything, photos of the "offending" vehicle will be paramount.

Just remember if you report it to your insurance company, the will fuck you over in the future, whether it was your fault or not.

If all else fails, you could probably get the dent taken out a reasonable price. I am due to visit CPS at Doncaster (Google them) soon with a similar problem on my daughter's car. They quoted me c£40 for a similar type of dent. Better than losing your no claims allowance.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you get it sorted. Not sure what good informing the police would be although having said that I once had a copper come to my door because they had a report that my car was stolen!

Basically some guys 320 got stolen and he later saw mine and assumed it was his because of the spoiler on the boot??

idiots, So I gave police my VIN etc and satisfied them that this is my car and not his!

Point is that if they bothered to come to my house to investigate a potential stolen car then maybe they would do something if you reported this?

Anyway best of luck and keep us informed.

never going to get the insurance involed - just hoping that the twit (a) offers to admit & pay which somehow I doubt.

If that is the case which I expect then it will be plan b..................

Bm was parked under a bright street light (not that that made any difference)

Van reversed off drive into my car & exited the street. As it is a cul de sac the van wouldn't reverse the other way.

Incedently I used to own the 2 houses in the picture & the car on the big driveway was my old S60 (D5) so I know exactly how cars manouver in, on & around that street. My car was half on the kerb so there was no reason for it to get caught as the road is plenty wide enough. Only one posibble vehicle could / would have been travelling directly towards the side of my car & that was that white van which explains the white paint on my black car.

Just to be sure the impact is a side on impact & not a paralell scrape. You can easily tell by looking at the damage. The van was a mercedes Vito.

My friend isnt a next door neighbour to the van owner as he lives down a private driveway to the left of the picture.

Sorry to hear this.

Similar thing happened to me, my neighbour opened his door into the side of my car. I confronted him and he basically said he wouldn't admit liability but didn't deny it.

Not much more I could do really without it getting unpleasant and as the damage was minor I couldn't be having the stress. But it was very frustrating.

Complete waste of police time. What do you expect them to do?

By all means confront the guy. He may admit it. But you have no evidence, so if he denies it, then that is the end.

I think he will pay for the PDR. Around £40/50. I would.

If he doesn't cough up then tell the cops. This is not wasteing their time. It might take them time to get round to it in the order of their priorities but it is why they are there. Think it would be classed as criminal damage. You can't just go around damaging peoples cars.

I had a car come on to my side of the road and clip my wing mirror with his, I instantly stopped, and he just drove off. I quickly span round and gave chase, stopping next to him as he pulled into a local garden centre. I asked the old guy that got out why he failed to stop and he told me he didn't hit me. At this point, I began to feel a bit wound up, so I told him my only option was to call the police as he had effectively "hit and run" and there were witnesses. He gave me his details and paid for the light damage he caused. Anyway, I guess if yu knock on the guys door, have a bit of a story, like was mentioned earlier, a note left on your car, a witness that pointed out the van etc, it might make him own up if he thinks someone saw what happened.

Cops won't be interested in that, or the scratch. Best bet is to have a chat with vanny, keep it polite and have some backup ready coz he could be an absolute bellend.

I missed the point Jimmy made in his second post about being half on the kerb, so OK it might technically have been unlawfully parked, but.......

does that make the damage to his car more acceptable in some way?

It wouldn't surprise me if the damage was deliberate, some people get very wound up about what they perceive to be their territory and leads to all sorts of shite happening to ones P&J.

I'd agree about the cops not being interested though, perhaps if Jimmy had noticed the damage on the same day and reported it at that time things might be different, who knows?
