Oh come on people. This isn't 1935 any more! Most new engines go right to a dyno and to red line right off the assembly line. Just like 3K oil changes, we need to get real with what the new technology allows.

BMW puts cars and bikes on the treadmill at the end of the assembly line. I can't say how far up the rpm gauge they go, but sounds more than 4k. You can find vids on youtube.

The happiest was when mine read 7. But then again I was a lot more worrisome about the car back then. On a side note, with this car you really don't even have to pass 5000 to have a lot of fun so, break-in (which I didn't observe in my last BMW) was not arduous.

I've read countless threads regarding opinions on the break in period.
I offer this simple advice for following or not following BMW's break-in period: 1. If you buy your car and intend to keep it, follow the break-in period. Do the extra oil change and don't abuse your car. Why risk the possibility of future pre-mature wear / damage. 2. If you leased it, then go ahead and do whatever floats your boat. When the car is turned in at lease end, some lucky person will end up with a car that's been beat to sh!t. Helpful Tip on #2: This is exactly why you don't want to buy a lease return or dealer loaner car. Always buy or lease new. If you can't afford it, then save your money until you can afford it. Exception to #2: Only way I would ever consider used is if I personally know the previous owner and that owner bought the car new and took good care of it. |

This is why BMW recommends 1200 miles, because it gives a chance for EVERYTHING to break in. |

See, I don't get people with mindset like yours at all. On one hand, people keep bitching how cars are getting heavier and heavier from generation to generation. Then on the other hand you have people who are bitching for having RFTs. RFTs save weight which in term improves fuel economy and handling. Isn't this what you bought your BMW? Performance and handling?
If they offered a full spare tire + tools + car jack in your car, then it would have added about 30 - 40 lbs on top of the current weight,

Take off your new RFTs, put on a new set of non-RFTs, sell the new RFTs to those who need new RFTs for lease return. If you lease your car, do the same then put your new RFTs away, put them back on before your lease return. Laugh all the way to the bank, and Happy New Year! Oh BTW do the above at your own risk Last edited by dtc100; 01-01-2011 at 10:10 AM.. |

I wasn't trying to start a break in good vs bad argument, just wanted to share my joy. My take on this is this: This is a car I bought and I intend to keep it for a while. If I do follow the break in guidelines that BMW engineers have set out then really the only harm I am doing is depriving myself of the pleasure of redline. If break in IS important and I do tear it up off the lot then I could be doing serious harm. So by doing a break in I risk essentially nothing and gain possibly everything. In the end I am happy the break in is over, I feel like it got me more comfortable with the car and possibly helped me keep some horsepower and fuel economy.
