Kamikaze Bird = Shattered windscreen

I have avoided all the pitfalls that the weather has thrown at us for the last two weeks and apart from one day when I thought 'sod it' as the snow was 6" deep on ice I have done my 150 mile round commute

Today I was coming around the M25 at 6pm having just collected my replacement MV3 alloy and was just approaching junction 28 from the services at South Mimms doing 65 in the centre lane when out of nowhere a 'kin' great big seagull, at least that is what I thought it was, dropped down in a kamikaze attack and smashed straight into my windscreen, frightened the sh*t out of me. The windscreen stayed intact but 50% of it now looks like an elaborate spiders web. Apart from the immediate shock of the impact, the bird was flung over the roof and I assume under the wheels of the following cars, I just prayed that the screen would stay intact.Never had anything like this happen before, I guess the bird was ill, tired or lost or all three. I hope it was just a common sea gull and not an owl or other bird of prey

Inspected the damage under the garage light when I got home and it looks like it is just the screen that is gone, no damage to the roof or A pillar. Will ring the Insurance company in the morning and see if I can get a new one fitted this week, it has auto wipers etc, so I guess it's non standard. Not sure what the force of a
6 kg bird hitting a screen at 65 is but I am so glad that BMW fit quality laminated screens to these cars or else I would have been wearing the poxy thing as a hat!!

You usually find the insurance companies just outsource it to autoglass or someone so you get what ever they put in unless you wanna pay full price for an OEM.

By the way, the windscreen should never actually split into chunks, its not like normal glass. the great think about laminated screens.

That wasnt a gull ...it was a turkey if it was 6kg!!!
Seagulls range from the little Gull at 120grammes to the great black backed Gull at 1.75 kg.

A swan is an excellent kamikaze type weighing in at up to 15kg... that would make you blink as it came through your window.

Is that blood or birdshit on the screen?

You could get a DNA of the blood which might give an idea of what species of bird it was and where it originated from, alternatively Gillian McKeith could examine the crap and let you know what it would have died from had it not collided with your screen.

The above would give you something to do whilst the screen was being replaced.

What about the chip, pasty, ice cream and rubbish eating gulls from Torquay? They're big feckers and must weigh more than 1.75 kg... Wouldn't want one of those hitting my screen or any other part of my car

Now that I have seen the impact area it's clear that it was a cormorant.

Probably a European Shag.
