Stocking up on run-flats
I was thinking today that my back tyres are going to need changing at some point and wondering about the problems people had had getting hold of runflats.
I'm seriously thinking about buying a set of tyres to keep in the garage so I don't need to worry about getting them in a hurry. Good idea or bad idea? |

Good idea from what I've heard on the supply side. Don't know if you spoke to flyingdwarf at UK2 (Dermot O'Leary lookalike)? He had a nightmare trying to get a replacement tyre. His car was out of action for a month and in the end forced his dealer to remove a tyre from a showcar, supply was that bad!!
If you can find the right tyre and at a good price, I would stock up. Especially if you've got the storage space too. Let me know if you find a good source and price. I expect you are on 255's at the rear and 225's on the front like me? |

Have you not thought about changing to normal low profile tyres instead of the RFTs. I am seriously thinking about doing this when I have do my 1st change. Also the ContiComfortKit is now available in the UK. What do others think about this???

I think those will stick too far outside the wheel well, don't you?

From 'blackcircles' on the net. The fronts are about £20 less a go. The price is equivalent to the 275/30/19 non-runflats I had on my 530d |

Interestingly Blackcircle quote £204.11 for Pilot Sport 2 (non run flat) for our 330d E46. My cash and carry do them for £175.00 inc VAT and fitting on site. I'll have to enquire for the price of run-flats although we shouldn't need them for a while.
By the way what sort of mileage are folks getting out of their run flats? Regards Chris |

I'd be VERY careful about using a cash and carry unless they have the correct equipment for fitting runflats. Most places still don't and they simply end up knackering your rims for you!
If in doubt, ask the manager to check they have the kit. Any damage = new rims!

Costco have 20% off all Michelin tyres until 18.02.07.
The price quoted for 205 / 55 (runflats) is £93. After the 20 % discount, thats £300 for 4 new tyres, which sounds a great deal. Not sure about the larger tyres though but definitely worth investigatig. |

The tyre fitting bay at Costco (Reading) puts most Kwik Fit dealers to shame!
If they have the correct equipment I wouldn't have any hesitation using them. Regards Chris |

To join Costco, you can either sign up to their membership for an annual fee of £30 (you have to meet certain eligible criteria which I think is mainly to do with your occupation - they only accept 'professionals') Or, tag along with a fully paid member who can either purchase the goods for you on their account or give you one of their 'discounted' cards (all full members can nominate friends and family to join at a reduced rate of £12) Hope that makes sense ! I had 2 michelin tyres fitted to my Golf TDI and their service was good. Thinking of buying some 18" tyres (with the currect costco discount) to go with my immiment purchase of 195 alloys. When I get a price for the tyres, I ll let you all know. |
