new engine
I've been having oil consumption issues with my 335 for 2 years (quart/750-800 miles). No noticeable sign of oil burning, or leakage. This Summer they found a small gasket leak that was dripping on the exhaust manifold, and fixed that. 750 miles later I was adding another quart. They then ended up then opening a case with BMW and documented the usage to see if it was consistent. After doing this through 3 fills up, I took the car back. They tore down to the block, thought at first I had a bad head (valve guides), and now just decided to give a complete new engine. So looks like I get to go through the break-in period for a 2nd time here.

Wow, that's an expensive little repair right there. Good luck with the new engine!

Nice how many miles? I'd get the wastegates checked to make sure they are within specs before putting the engine back in.

I had 60K on my old engine. Glad I had the extended CPO warranty. Good advice on the waste gates. I think they will call me when the engine comes in so I will mention it to them.

Nope.
I still get a N54 engine though just a 2011 model. I had asked to see if they were giving me a N55, since that is what is standard in the 335i now. I'm hoping I get the extra 20 HP that now comes with the N54, since I'm assume I'll get what is now in the 335is. Anybody got some tips on what to look out for there to tell for sure? |

This iS model's engine isn't really any different than a standard N54. It's the supporting engine hardware (oil coolers and such) that are different.
And ECU software, of course.

They will replace the engine with the same engine that originally came with the car, no n55 or newer n54 from the IS. I would be happy getting a new engine though.

Even though it is not it is a nice feeling that you know the real story about the engine and it is new

Would a new engine show up on a CarFax or any other reporting service beyond the BMW service report? I wonder if that would reduce the value of the vehicle. If I was in the market for a used vehicle and saw that the engine was replaced, I would have some serious reservations on purchasing it.

No such thing, it's remanuf., and no way a dealership can do the same job as the factory, at the same level. Everyone wants a free upgrade, but this is BMW. There's absolutely no free lunch. I dunno, people say, "I drove the car for 2 years and they gave me my money back, almost all of it." Doesn't sound right that BMW would get taken advantage of, but whatever. Can't possibly be SOP....
