Possible proof the 335is is underated from the factory?

I recently traded in my 2008 335i for a new 2011 335is...

It's "officially" rated at 320 HP, yet I noticed in the owners manual it is listed as 335 HP.

What do you guys think, a typo or officially listed at 320 for marketing purposes to better differenciate the M3?

Here's a PDF of the manual (to save you from walking out to your car)

http://www.bmwusa.com/PDF_23abd5f9-5...2c99cc73c.arox

Page 246 is actually Page 248 in the PDF.

Yes, it does say 335hp @ 5900 and 332 @ 1500

Not a surprise really, we all know BMW's figures are always conservative. But it is interesting how they let this one slip through the cracks.

do you sleep better at night knowing that you're getting 10 more hp than you paid for?
who cares if its underrated, that's not affecting your performance in anything except for "bragging"
sorry if i'm coming off rudely

BMWs always tend to somewhat "feel" faster than what's on paper....I think its because of most of the torque being available earlier on than in the Japanese cars.

I think there is a significant difference in curb weights between an 03 lexus gs300 and 06 325i.

I googled it and found that the lexus weighs 3,649lbs while making 220hp@ 5,800rpm and 220lb-ft @ 3,800 rpm
http://www.new-cars.com/2003/lexus/l...cs.html#weight

while your 325 weighs 3285lbs and makes 215hp@6250rpm and 185 ft lb@ 2,750 rpm

Not sure if that tells the whole story, since his car is older, there could be something wrong with it too.

I don't know what to make of this. You would think it's a typo but if you look at the Z4 sDrive35is, it's rated at 335hp. Edmunds Inside Line tested the Z4 sDrive35is 0-60 in 4.7 sec and C&D tested the 335is 0-60 in 4.6 sec. The Z4 sDrive35is is 22 lbs lighter than the 335is.

The numbers don't add up.

hmm... take it to the dyno and check... then you'll get the real value and not bmw's estimate.

While I partially agree, you can't consider two tests from two different sources the de facto standard when comparing such minuscule differences. It's well known that some 335's simply produce more power than others, there is some variance between the engines themselves. Other differences such as test style, equipment, ambient temperature, and elevation could factor into tests done by different parties.

Combine all of these factors, and there's just no way to claim anything definitive from those numbers.

Yikes. It used to be that the heaviest none M Z variant is about 220 lbs lighter than the LIGHTEST of the 3 series that it's based on.

My car looked wicked fast in the brochure, and way more reliable. There wasn't a single photo of it on a flatbed.

Yep somethings off somewhere.

In regards to the manual, I think it's a typo on the same engine used in the Z4 and not corrected for the 335is manual.

320 -> 335 = ~4.5% increase
215 x 1.045 = ~225
