Is there a E90 transmission pan replcement DIY?
Just curious if there is a DIY on replacing the tranny pan for an 06 330i. Searched and only found a DIY on tranny fluid change. I am looking to replace the tranny pan and gasket, as well as a fluid change.
This would be very helpful, thanks.

Are you experiencing a leak? If so it could possibly be the Mechtronic Sleeve. Seems to be a common problem on the 330i. Just had mine repaired on my 330i (w/36,000 miles) under warranty. The dealer replaced the Sleeve, Pan Gasket, some Miscellaneous Hardware, and the Fluid. The pan itself was not replaced. The paperwork referenced SIB240806.
Thought I would mention this, maybe this could get the repair done under warranty?

When I bought my CPO last year one week later I had this exact same thing happen to me. Wonder how they did their inspection since a week later transmission fluid was all over my garage. They fixed it under warranty but did not use all new fluid. I was a little upset that they reused what they drained and topped it off with new fluid. Not sure how they can say what they drained did not get contaminated. They said this is how BMW says to do it.
So it has been almost a year and I have no issues. I had 42k on the car when my leaked. Quote:

I always try to ask the dealer prior to them starting any work to explain in detail to what they are performing. That way if I disagree or feel that they should repair in a way that satisfies me. I will offer to pay for the extras, such as all new fluid in this case, to satisfy my mind that the repair was done to my expectations.

Believe me if I knew they were reusing oil I would have paid for the new stuff as well. Who would have thought they would reuse.
For anyone else that enounters this make sure you get all the oil replaced. Quote:

Yes and I was pretty upset. I actually called BMW North America and complained but they informed me that is how they do it.
Like I mentioned earlier if I knew they were going to do that I would have requested new fluid and paid the difference. That never crossed my mind. This is to BMW for reusing the fluid

Found my invoice. You will see they added .5 liters of fluid. That is what made me concerned. Not replaced but added. BMW Corporation are cheap a$$ in my opinion. How much money would it have cost them to replace all the fluid? They do this so your transmission will fail earlier so they will get more money out of you in the long run. That is what I believe.

You might want to get a copy of that SIB. Some TSB's (technical service bulletin - which is what an SIB is) are often called "hidden warranties" as they discuss how the repair should be handled outside of warranty.
In addition, you can call BMWNA and ask them if they will do a goodwill repair if the SIB does not mention out of warranty repairs. Accordingly, your first step is to get a copy of the full SIB.Once you have that, come back here and give us specifics about your warranty - are you out of both miles and time? Time only? Miles only? That may be important to determine strategy with BMWNA. |

They reused that too. The filter is built into the pan, sucks doesn't it?

Haven't dealt with a ZF transmission in my Passat, I plan to change the filter/fulid next weekend..Far as I know the tranny has no temp sensor making it a bit more complicated.( A infrared temp gun, is recommended) According to my Bentley the tranny fluid can only be filled between 86-120F (Best Results, at check at 85F) using Shell M-1375.4 for ZF tranny's. 10qt are required for a with the torque converter drained (If not draining torque converter, measure fluid removed and replace with same amount. Cheapest place I found for the pan/filter is

Now they estimated $700 to fix it. Does anyone have a copy of the SIB 240806? As I stated above, the warranty is 4-year 50,000 miles. The warranty expired 5/30/06 and my car has 45,000 miles right now. I am out of time on the warranty, but not over miles. Please help me with a strategy when contacting BMWNA. I do not want to have to pay $700 for something they should have done under warranty when they found the problem. I know the previous owner would not have told them to skip this work, but if they asked, he may have mentioned to skip the tire replacement only.

Will do, this is what I assumed. But I thought I should get all the advice I could before doing anything.
Anyone else have any other advice to add. It would truly be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for everyone's help. Will update this post as things progress.
This is my plan: Going to send a letter to BMWNA including the SIB document and citation from warranty manual as well as a copy of the invoice detailing they noted "seepage at tranny pan" during my warranty period. I assume they will contact me and let me know whether or not they will goodwill the repair. Let me know if anyone has any further advice on what I should include. Also, I am not sure if 1) there is an email address for BMWNA and I should just email then and attach the document scans - or 2) if I should send them an actual letter with the documents included. Also does anyone know off the top of their head a mailing address that this letter should be sent to? Thanks again for everyone's help! This is $700 I would rather not have to fork out - seems bogus they would not do the repair when they noticed the leak.

Be very clear in your letter and don't use flowery language. Just say that BMW identified the leak before the warranty expired but did not fix it. Now it requires repair and you believe that it is a warranty item and ask them to repair it under warranty. |
