Edit: Tribute video added!

I was riding along a country road when I noticed a Chevrolet Tahoe had pulled up to a stop sign on a side street. I looked at the driver scan both down the road and my direction. Because she turned my direction, I thought she had seen me, but she did not. When I was 1.5 car lengths from the intersection she pulled out into the street, leaving me only time to apply full pressure to the brakes. A collision was inevitable, but I was able to bleed off enough speed to avoid fatality. Had the bike not be equipped with ABS, it may not have stayed upright, and I may not be alive today. I was taken to the ER by ambulance but was discharged with a broken right hand and bruises and lacerations. I was wearing full protective gear (helmet, jacket, gloves, jeans, boots).

My 28 day old S1000RR did not fare so well, it has been deemed a total loss by the insurance company. It has been a painful ordeal figuring out how to replace the bike. I have included pictures to tell the story.

Any kind words, or advice would be appreciated.

Also, I want to thank BMW Motorrad USA for providing such an awesome machine, equipping it with ABS+DTC, and providing the complimentary safety package to US servicemembers so I am still alive today to continue to serve and protect the constitution of the United States of America, against all enemies foreign or domestic.

You are very lucky to be alive my friend, glad to have you still with us!

Full protective gear is a must for any bike, that goes to everyone.

Best of luck getting back on track

Wow, sorry to hear man. Glad your okay. Thankfully as you said, you WERE wearing all the safety gear, without that stuff, your story would have been much different.

Wow, I wish you a quick and full recovery. I know little about what to do regarding vehicles that were involved in crashes, but I do have experience with a crushed wrist. The only advice I have is to work the heck out of it during rehab. Do 3x what the doctors and occupational therapists order you to do and you should have pretty much a full recovery. The last thing you need from this are negative effects that last a lifetime. Everything else can be replaced but you only get one shot with your body and physical well-being. Sorry to hear about that bike too. Beautiful thing it was.

everybody i know that had a bike can share the same story, people i know with 600/1000RR, gsxr 1000, r6/r1, etc. all had incidents that were identical or at least similar to yours. I know how fun it is to ride, but its just so freakin dangerous. Hope you have a full recovery, and i wish you well. thankfully this was a bmw bike and not anything else.

glad to hear you are ok! Sucks about your bike, you'll get another one I'm sure. You are braver than me, I don't ride on the street unless it's at least 65 outside, it isn't fun unless the tires are sticky

Heal up soon, and come out strong next season! (on a Ducati maybe)

get better man, they harp us military enough as it is. Stay safe, keep wearing that gear and go get you another bike when you've recovered. No matter how safe you are on a bike, some dumb ass soccer mom will always be there to put you in the hospital. best wishes man

Thanks for all the best wishes...

Pictures on scene were courtesy of my girlfriend and her parents who rushed to the scene. I was able to rattle off her phone number to the first responders.

Great to hear you're ok. Those can be very bad situations.

too bad you can't keep the motor on the bike and get a new replacement bike. That spare engine would mount nicely to just about anything.

two words: go kart

ATGATT, thanks for another vivid reminder for all of us riders. Glad to hear you are mostly all right. Too bad about the beautiful bike! I've been lusing after one of those. I'm sure you'll be back in the saddle again soon. Heal well.

Happy to hear that you are well and good. You're very fortunate that it couldn't have been a lot worse (duh!). Glad to hear that you will live to ride another day. As someone who has also had his share of close calls on a bike, I can sympathize with you!

And yes, got your email. You've been added to the beta list

Mike spent most of his time at the hospital trying to hook up one of our friends with the hot RN's and watching Top Gear on the room TV.

Glad you're OK Mike!

WOW, although many people tell me its deadly to ride a bike, i dont care and i still want one. It sucks that such a beautiful machine was destroyed by a soccer mom in her big ass truck that i bet had no passengers in it. Did she not see the circle and square coming at her? I guess on a bike you have to be weary of these things and you were but she wasn't. Definetely salvage the bike, its sucha beauty. I hope you get another one and you keep riding. I also wish you a speedy recovery.
