Backed into concrete block. Help understanding insurance!
EDIT: BMW Dealerships around me do not have body shops. Car is throwing some signs and I do not think the car can be fixed in only one place, maybe it will.
Body work is done in another shop Other inspection done at dealership. How should I file/claim insurance for this single incidence? ------------------------------------------- I backed into a concrete thing, what it was I have no clue. Did not get out to look back, lack of time. I will go again to see what exactly I ran into. Was a stressful morning from the start. Headed out to return some rental equipment and parked in this fairly tight spot at the shop. Came out in a rush to head out to work, and bam, backing up, there is a pretty strong impact. I was not looking back while backing up. Bumper has a hole, a vertical line. Definitely needs replacement. Need some help figuring out those symbols. A BIG Airbag symbol came on and has stayed there. Another smaller set of seat belt sign and airbag symbols have come on too. I did not drive on the freeway and took the inside road to come to work. What should I be doing? Perhaps there is more damage than visible? My car is a lease car, which I took only on 15th of last month. FML, I have had excellent driving record so far and this stressful morning just ruined it. Claim insurance? Deductible is $500. Can I drive the car on the freeway still? How should go about explaining this to the insurance company and covering it up a little maybe? It is my fault though, so no denying there. Will there be a rise in my insurance premium now? Thanks a lot guys. I am really pissed at myself for damaging my baby. It did not drive the same way to work, or may be I was thinking too much. PS: Will post pictures soon

Oh no...I'm sorry to read about the accident with your new car. Once you post up pics I'm sure you'll get some good advice about how to proceed.
Oh, and from looking at my owner's manual, the warning symbols w/airbags/seatbelts means "belt tensioners and/or airbag system failed - have the system checked immediately". I would take it into the dealer and have it looked at. Last edited by renaultf1; 11-01-2010 at 01:29 PM.. |

Can I take the car to dealership and get estimates, before I claim insurance?
Or this will be oxymoronic PS: I have never had to claim insurance before, so I am not really sure how it will work when there is no third party involved.

Go to your local shop might be cheaper to just repair and paint . If it's more then 500 they put a claim In pay the deductible and get an mtech rear if you dont already have one !

This is what the manual says, these symbols have come on my dash, trying to get hold of a way to get pictures and post.

Its hard to guess the damage without pictures... I'd say call the insurance company and let them take a look at it. Since your airbag lights are going off... I'm sure repair will be more then $500... I cant say how much more though. Your insurance will not go up by just calling the insurance company and having an adjuster look at it.
shit happens bro... take it easy... we all love our cars... but at the end of the day they are replaceable & repairable... I wont sweat too much over it. |

not to insult but lets not make this a honda forum where people post their problems with no pictures to exemplify the problem.
Be happy you have the warranty and this may be a great opportunity to upgrade the rear bumper... good luck and congrats on the new ride. |

If a good long description with only one single issue of a replacement of Bumper makes it not enough, I really don't see what new the pics are going to tell. The cockpit has the signs which i posted. Bumper is completely intact end to end, except a long hole and good amount of scuffing. It took the impact by folding in a bit and popping back. I would gladly post pictures, though even in this world in do not carry a phone with data plan so I can mail the pic to myself and then post it here. I honestly feel that comparison to some honda forum (perhaps you have been very active there with your previous rides), was uncalled for.

Umm.. Not sure what the relevance of a warranty is in this case, as the vehicle is throwing those lights of because of an impact. Not a warranty or manufacturer defect...

Here is the other issue right here.
The car is throwing up those signs, which would probably need to be addressed at a Dealership. My local dealerships in Socal DO NOT have body shops, so they will send me out somewhere else. How do I work this thing with the insurance? This is a single incidence. I will be claiming my collision insurance but half of the job may be performed somewhere else, other than the dealership itself. Any insights please? I really appreciate any input. Thanks again guys!

Get the ball rolling with insurance, and tell them you're going to take it to the BMW dealer for repair. The dealer will almost always have a local body shop they send vehicles out to for repair; should be a pretty simple process.. in theory.
