Post @ 1,378 Miles - Break In Q

i am at 1,378 miles with my new 335i and i called the dealership to schedule a maintance consisting of replacing the transmission, differential, and engine oil change. the service tech said that this was not necessary due to the titanium bearings that bmw now use. did you guys change anything yet or should i keep my car the way it is or enforce it?

i heard from alot of people that because of it being a new car, the gears, etc tend to shave metal shavings into the fluid and is best to change it at least around 1,200 miles at the norm. help please.

A lot of people (myself included) had a early oil-change performed to remove any break-in shavings. Seems that people have it done between 1.5k and 5k miles. I had mine done at 5k miles.

I don't think it's necessary to change the trans. and differential oils this early.

overkill. oil change maybe every 5-10k miles, but the other fluids dont need to be touched

+2 Just do the engine oil unless you plan to track the beast and want to put in racing fluids.

yup....I agree. Engine oil only and save yer dough. Plus, see if they will do the first oil change for you for free. I bought mine in SF and just had it serviced in LA - in Santa Monica. They did my oil change for free. More than likely to ensure I give them a 5 (rating) of course, but nonetheless it was a very good gesture since they saved me $148. And i will do all of my servicing with them from now on.

And if you follow the factory-recommended maintenance programs, your services, including oil services and fluid services, are free for 4 years/60,000 miles, or if you were smart, upgraded to the 6 year/100,000 since it covers brake pads and brake rotors, which go out every 20k-40k miles depending on how you drive (unless you lease, then you probably don't have your car for over 4 years anyway)

You can change the differential fluid yourself, but you'll need to use an extractor because there's no drain plug.

As for the transmission I have no help for you. I believe it's sealed and/or the fill hole is hidden underneath the tranny tunnel.

o so i took the information wrong. i thought you needed to change differential, engine and transmission for the metal shavings to be gone. so you just need the engine oil for the metal shavings to be removed?

I'm a big believer in post break-in oil change for the engine, but not the rest of the drivetrain.

DONT WORRY, "metal shavings", its not like you will find chunks of some alloy in your engine or other fluids. You wouldnt even see them unless you filtered your used oil, or looked for some light reflection in the oil...even then, they would be better decribed as incredibly fine beach sand, not shavings or bits, etc.

Just change the oil and leave the rest alone! Too early to do any other fluid change. Enjoy your ride!

This could be really a dumb question, but where is the oil filter located for 335i? Is there a DIY posted?

Your dealer needs to be put in their place for charging $148.00 oil change.
I just had mine done 2 days ago on my 335i Sedan cost me $77.00 tax included.
One of the biggest BMW dealers in the country!

Would be happy to post receipt if needed?

Look at the engine from the front of the car. The oil filter is just to the right of the engine at the front. It is cylindrical in shape and has a cover that screws off. The filter itself is just the filter media with no can around it. Very environmentaly friendly and rediculously easy to access.

Some people are not priveledge enough to work in their own garage/driveway. I know how to do an oil change, change brake fluid, tranny fluid, let along other mods, but I still pay for an oil change at the dealership because I live in a condominium where the management are strict about doing auto repair in the complex. My neighbor changed the oil on his Nissan, sure he saved himself $30 he would've got charged at the dealership, but he also got hit with a $100 violation fee from the management.

To the OP, just change the oil. Leave everything else as is.

Don't worry, it's fine grained sandpaper your metal parts are grinding against....
