Smile December 2006 3 Series Sales Report

3 Series sales of 13,164 units “took off” this month in response to the new 328 and 335 models as sales increased 24.3% over sales of last December. For the entire year of 2006 3 Series sales increased 12.4% over sales for all of 2005.

Mercedes-Benz sold 5,197 units of the C Class units this month, down a resounding 47.0% from the 9,806 units sold last December. YTD sales for the C Class were down 17.3% for all of 2006. MB needs to introduce the new C Class now.

Lexus sold 5,538 IS 250/350 units in December, up 22.6% from the 4,518 sold in December, 2005.

I have to say that the BMW 3 Series is the undisputed leader over the MB C Class and the Lexus IS 250/350 as BMW sold more 3’s than the Lexus IS and MB C Class combined.

Please note that I am report only the United States sales data.

The C class is at the end of its life cycle.

To put things in perspective, roughly and from memory, about 40k Camrys are sold in a month, 27k Accords, and 17k Sonatas. To me, with the 3's being a subcompact luxury car, 13k sold is strong. I'd think that's being limited by supply, not demand.

Actually the 3 Series is in the compact segment, bordering on mid-size with its latest revision. So yes, 13K sold is pretty damn strong for the car that it is today. You can imagine what will happen when the 1 Series arrives.

Wow looking at the PDF in the 5th month of existence there are close to 5000 335i Coupes roaming around in US. In retrospect my E30 M3 was one of the last 100 cars imported into US from a total of 5000 ever to arrive in US during the entire 4 year production cycle.

Does anyone have an idea of how many 3 Series (328/335) are on order?

I imagine the stats would be close to 20k/mo if a 323 under $30k, and a 320d with 45 mpg were available. What are the % in the Canadian market? Surely not as high as the Euro market, but still a sizeable niche substantially distinct from other 3 series models.
