active steering
Does E90, E92 come with active steering when you order it with the "sport package" ? I remember 5-series with sport package came with the active steering. honestly i hate active steering because it lacks steering feel. thx.

You don't have to get it -- it is a stand alone option. However, as I've posted elsewhere, I would trade every other option on my 335i for active steering. It is the single best part of the car. Take a lengthy test drive before posting that it "lacks steering feel". Drive both in several situations, and decide for yourself.
I originally based my decision to forego AS on the Car & Driver reviews which blasted it. Then I drove it, and reversed my thinking. During the several month wait for my car, I worried if it was the right choice, and read many more reviews -- most incredibly favorable. I reserved judgement again until I got my car, and drove it for awhile. It didn't take long until I realized I will never again buy a car without active steering. Being a Porsche owner, Audi owner, and previous BMW owner -- some of the best steering/handling cars on the road -- this feature is the future. _Scott |

This feature makes driving in the city so much easier for me, and on twisty roads it is like driving a go-kart.

I have a similar story to scm6079.
I ordered active steering as a safety feature because my family also drives the car. Based on reviews I have read at the time, I was absolutely sure I had made the wrong decision. The dealer didn't even have any AS cars for me to test drive. Boy was I ever wrong- the day I took delivery, the instant I turned the wheel out of the parking spot, and felt how sharply the car responded, I knew that I would love this system. It just makes the car feel so much precise and alive. The steering has as much "feel" as my old E36 if not more- you still feel the slightest roughness in the road vibrate through the rim, you still feel the steering go light when understeering, you still feel the wheel fighting you while oversteering...so I really do not know where these totally unfounded, lack of feel reviews are comming from. The two options to have on any new 3 is definitely the active steering and the sport package.

I agree with most that iDrive is all personal preference... it's novel and cool, but there is no right or wrong to ones choice when it comes to this option,
But with AS, I vehemently disagree with all of the detractors. Even tracked, I think that AS will earn its marks in the long run (depending on the track, nach, not on the strip). Like iDrive it has it learning curve and does things faster than all physical commands (and with precision when accustomed), but unlike iDrive, you become accustomed to it without active learning (AL), and it actually improves everything within its scope. I wouldn't ever turn it off because i thought it was crampin' my style. It becomes completely transparent and you just drive easier and have more time and cerebral bandwidth for say, shifting and choosing a line, etc. I hates me some learning and I loves me some doing things faster with less effort, so I love AS. Baah, to those that say that can't feel the road and that idle hands are the devils workshop. Time will tell, so I hope someone archives this stuff for posterity. My Dad hates my HDTV. Says it gives him a headache. Still uses DOS, and he's right in that its is a very pure O.S. for what he uses his computer for. I could have gotten a set of BBS wheels for what I paid for a 'transparent, organic, and full bodied cartridge which possessed a beguiling silkiness that was quite intoxicating' turntable stylus recently, and so it goes. AS is by far the best technology that BMW, or any automaker for that matter, has delivered to the masses my years of auto consumership. Last edited by edgarj; 01-03-2007 at 04:36 AM.. |

Working for the dealer I hear all the stories about what the magazines say. I have had several customer say they hate iDrive and AS. But not one of them has ever used either. Not one customer has complained about it that actually owns the car. Especially everyone with an E60 equipped with AS. They all love it, and will never go back.

I agree with one of the other posters, it is probably my favorite feature of the car and is the feature (besides all the power) that sets the E92 apart from my E46.

Wow...these are some pretty big endorsements. I am on the fence right now and trying to decide. Its my last undecided option. Could car less about the money because on a lease it comes out to about $12/month and I'm splitting it with another guy so it is $6/month to me.
Did I read this correctly - can you turn it off? If you turn it off does the car act exactly like a non-AS equipped car or is there more linkage you need to go through? |

No, you can't turn it off, but it can be disabled by the diagnostic unit if something goes wonky. You'll get a warning on the dash, and you can continue driving with a lower-than-normal steering ration (one more turn lock-to-lock than non-AS cars iirc).
While i'm at it, I'll throw in my own endorsement: I had already decided to get a 335i when I asked to drive one with AS. I hopped in, started the car, and pulled out with a shit-eating grin on my face. It took about 50 feet of parking-lot driving to decide that I had to have AS. A few freeway laps just confirmed the decision. Now that I've had it for ~4500 miles, it's still my favorite feature. I can't get enough of the logarithmic-steering effect when you slow quickly and turn into a parking spot. It probably sounds funky if you haven't driven it, but to me it feels like you just think a direction and the car hops to it. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but you'd really be doing yourself a disservice if you don't try it out before you place your order. |

I didn't particularly want AS but the only 330i I could find with the other options I wanted had AS. I'm so glad I got it, not just because of the ease of maneuvering at low speeds, but because the system is so transparent. The only time I notice anything odd is on tightly curved on-ramps, where minor adjustments are needed to hold the line.

I think its fantastic. I have driven all the other BMWs with it, and drove my 335i around last night for this first time and its such a blast. I dont understand why you wouldnt get the active steering.
