Thanks guys.
The key to the moon, is expsoure.
You can't use an Automatic mode, as it read too much darkness and overexposes the concentrated light emited from the moon.

Rule of thumb, to shoot the moon.......

Whatever ASA/ISO you're shooting at, is the shutter speed.
So, if you're shooting at 200iso, shoot at 1/250 of a second.

And F11-16, in that area.
You can bracket your f stop, as finding the perfect stop for your area will be key to great shots.
If you live in an area like LA, usually f11 works great, as there is more 'shiz' in the atmosphere above the city.

If you are out in the sticks and have a crystal clear view of the stars, shoot at f16.

Also, a good sharp lens and no cropping in post, will get you the best details.

This is obviously a lens that most won't shoot the moon with.
Canons 600 f4L is a sharp piece of glass !!!!!!!!! :rocks:

Have fun..... shoot the moon !

What do you do on the longer exposure needed for dusk shots without a huge telephoto? Example:

The lens insn't the key to that photo, it's the proper exposure.

On your shot, unfortunetly, you need to use a longer exposure for the main scene.
Gorgeous shot, btw.......

That, unfortunetly OVER exposes the moon.
to get it perfect, you would have had to exposed for the scene and framed out the moon.
Then, double expose the moon in the place you wanted it at.
Like my other thread, of the Boston Sky line....
That was a double exposure.

There is NO way to expose both pieces of this frame properly.

Email me a high res file of this shot and let me play with it, for fun.
I think you'll be stoked with the outcome.
If you're not offended by Photoshop work.

Hope the explanation helped.

Thanks I figured a double exposure would be the only solution. I have this shot with out the moon but it's not as good. I will go back and try again with your technique.

I also have this shot, I only noticed the moon in the sky during post work.

Love the cross/steeple shot. Very nice.

The key to the moon is, proper exposure and good glass.
Also, for us in LA, having a clear sky is key.
There is soooo much shiz in our atmosphere, that acts like a Soft Effects filter which robs detail.

so everyone, go get yourself a Canon ef 600 f4L and shoot away ! ;-)

off to work.......

What you don't know is that's just the reflection of the hood of his car. In fact that might be a cool shot. Try and center something in the hood of a black car at night and take a pic.

You'd be able to pull that back with an ND Grad filter. Try the Lee or Hoya "P" series.
