Drone at 40 MPH

Hi all,

I picked up a 2007 CPO X3 3.0si a month ago. I didn't think it was that bad during the test drive, but there is clearly an annoying drone at 40 MPH, not related to RPM (tried different gears), so that should rule out exhaust...must be tires or drive train. I've got the OEM Scorpion STR's on there, which look maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of there original tread. Is this drone typical? Does it go away with different tires? Is it the differential or transfer case?

Mine has a bit of wind noise at high speeds, but closing the sunroof cover fixes that.

No drone from my tires, which are the same as yours.

I have the same droning or whirring and I'm getting a headache from it. I was told to put car in neutral as you're moving. If droning doesn't stop, then it's probably not the transmission/transfer case. It might be the wheel bearings. My next step is to have someone check the wheels.

My noise doesn't change in neutral. I'm going to try a higher tire pressure and see if the noise changes, if so, it's definitely the tires. It doesn't change when cornering at all, which it when bearing noise typically gets worse, but I suppose if both bearings (left and right) are equally bad, you wouldn't notice a change when cornering...one is more loaded, but the other is more unloaded.
