Some of it seems to be coming out through the side of the car next to the tire. Looks annoying to see that black fabric sticking out. Wondering what its for before I try to get rid of it.

Yeah I guess its called the wheel wall. Well that black fiber stuff is sticking out of the car on the exterior through the part of the car where the exterior goes inward forming a crevass along the exterior of the car from the wheel to the trunk area. I tried pulling on it, but it wouldn't come out. I just wonder how the heck did it get there? Its the same stuff I see on the wheel wall, and of course real close to the wheel wall on the exterior of the car, but I dont see anywhere on the wheel wall where the fabric is being pulled on.

A pic would help out a lot with this.
There is fabric on the rear wheel well; it's to help reduce noise from stones that may be kicked up by the tires. Best thing would be to just go to the dealer. Have them check it out before you start yanking on the fabric.

I'd read somewhere that it's a german regulation item to keep tire spray down at high speeds. But that just sounds too retarded to be true. Anybody know for sure?

no offense, but do you always start pulling on things without knowing what they do?
Seriously though, that fibrous matting shouldn't be poking out on the exterior of the car. Take it to the dealership and ask them to remove it. Good luck.

It's pretty bizarre how there are often unintelligent responses here. I was wondering the same thing about my coupe. One person responded have the dealer remove it, how stupid. What would taking a picture prove, that it's really there? Like the engine start button that is turned up to the right on the coupe.

Your start button question were interesting but we did show you that the e90 did no have that issue so we could not believe how it could be crooked (well at least I could not believe that bmw would make a crooked text or even use a different start button when they can use the same button from the e90 model).
