Any HONDA gurus on here?

Aside from my e90, we have a civic. lol

I know almost nothing about transmissions and from what I can tell, the torque converter is going out. it whines in Park, N, and D, and when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd it shoots RPMs to redline then changes gears.

I just fixed the Vtec, and now the tranny is on the way out.

My question is - can I replace the Torque converter only, or do I need to throw an entire new tranny in it?

Any direction would be appreciated!!

I am, but not familar with auto trannys, ive gone thru plenty of manual ones. You should be able to drop the tranny and remove the casing and get in there just as a manual one.

You can replace the converter only if needed, but for all the labor involved Id suggest replacing both...as it does sound like the trans is gone.

As the other poster said, for the labor/parts/price alone, it might be a better idea to get a used jdm transmission from the engine yards.

^+1 you would rather replaced the whole tranny as it is cost cheaper than replacing internally..

Manual transmissions were 500-600 back in the day, Autos a little bit more. Labor shouldn't be that much as it is really easy on a Honda.

I would suggest you just replaced both. I was actually a heavy line tech for Honda and now i'm heavy line at Acura. its pretty obviously Honda's have bad transmissions so replaced it as a whole eliminates all the possibilities. Consider you have a civic, replacing a trans on that should be a breeze. Let me know if you need any other advice or suggestions.

Never touched an auto honda trans, but I've rebuilt a few manual B series transmissions. But like said above, swapping out the whole thing is a lot easier. A buddy of mine is a tech at Norm Reeves honda in west covina, and does side work at his house (also in W Covina), so if you needed any help, I could refer you to him.

Thanks guys, got a new one in it.

The cooling system failed and burned up the Torque converter and in turn, the tranny itself.

Luckily my transmission guys were able to seriously hook it up on the pricing so its better off now _
