Mercedes 2004 E55 vs 335i coupe vs G35 coupe

It's always enjoyable to have some fun with fellow co-workers and there is a nice short straight away right in front of our company building where you can almost get through 3 gears at maximum acceleration. It's located in the industrial part of town so unless you are leaving right at 5PM when everyone gets off work, which usually doesn't happen often for us, it's relatively empty.

I was able to only make one run against each car on two seperate occasions. Needless to say, running against a G35 was not really a challenge for a 335 but I wanted to see what the car can do. We both had a roll on start in first gear at about 10 mph, first gear was dead even but once I shifted into second and about 500rpms later my car began to pull on his steadily. Looking over, I saw my co-worker's facial expression of frustration and smiled while I quickly looked back ahead and shifted at about 6800rpms, banging it into third as if I were Michael Schumacher for another rush at towards 7k. At this point, I was just about a half car length ahead and by 6400rpms in third I had pulled what I estimated to be about a 2 car length lead before I had to shut down for a stop light. We had our fun and he called me later saying there wasn't much he could do to keep up once we took off. I told him roll on starts I figure to have the advantage almost everytime but if we ever were ever able to have a standing start, it would test our driving abilities a bit more and his car would stand to have a better chance if I completely bungled the launch with him executing a perfect launch as if he were about to win a NHRA top fuel drag race for a million dollars.

A few days later, I had the pleasure of running against another co-worker's E55. I had an E55 before it's damn fast. Sprints to 140MPH are herculean, effortless and not at all rambunctious. You don't really feel the exhiliration of speed, rather it's an endless feeling of smooth torque although at the top end, it does feel like it's a little short on breath at times. We had a similiar starting condition as with the the G35 except this time the E55 let me get a brief headstart. Rolling on the throttle at about 15 mph, I let the car make its mad rush toward the danger zone before quickly shifting into second. Feeling the usual thrust from my car is always a pleasurable experience, similar getting an asian massage. However on this occasion, I mortified to see the E55 literally walk away from my car as if I were a little kitten trying to keep up with a cheetah. It was not even a contest. There is a small possibilty that if I had some type of SMG transmission or even the new steptronic with paddle shifters it wouldn't of been as devastating when I had to shift into second. That momentary lapse magnified his speed. Making the futile run toward redline, thinking why do I bother wasting my gasoline at this point, I continued to see the E55 pull another 1-2 car lengths and still gaining tremendous speed. His car quickly approached the upcoming stop light and started to brake, obviously knowing all I was seeing was his quad tail pipes. We rolled down the window and the best compliment he could give me was "Your first gear wasn't too shabby..."

Wow. Well the E55 can beat an M5 to start with. But the 335 sure is damn fast.

At first I thought you were going to say that you pulled on the E55.

I have an '07 335i and an '06 E55. The E55 is much, much faster. Give me a secluded stretch of highway with some twistys and I'll choose the 335i every time. They are very different cars, but the steering and handling of the BMW is truly a thing of beauty.

I would've expected an E55 to seriously own a stock 335i in a straight-line.

Now, I think the E55 vs. an Xede-equipped 335i might be a bit more interesting.

The E55 is a very capable sports sedan that does ~ 4.1-4.3 sec. 0-60mph and 1/4 mi. ~ 12.3 sec. @ 113mph; it's got monster torque (but it's very heavy...4,481 lbs) and the Xede-equipped 335i can do 0-60mph and 1/4 mi. in ???? (probably ~ 4.1 -4.5 sec. and low-mid 12 sec. range), and it too has monster torque (and it's much lighter than the E55). Like I said, it could be very interesting.

Great...let us know. I want to know if it can be done as my AT/paddles car is Xede-equipped (322 WHP/378 wheel TQ). Just haven't had any opportunities to really test it like this yet.

Love the E55, amazing car really. That year range (04 /05/ 06) is awesome with the supercharged engine. Torque monster is an understatement. Let us know how ya make out after the Xede install.

I still think the E55 will beat the Xede'ed 335 with some difficulties, but it will beat...

I've read the thread and posts about your car, it's very impressive. I've been patiently ( and I'm almost at my limit now ) waiting for the Xede. Are you planning on taking your car to make a 1/4 mile? I'm not sure if your local tracks are open during this time of year but I figure your car with the steptronic will give some excellent and consistent results. I usually go to Infineon to test some cars for 1/4 mile performance but the season is done for this year and will not re-open till March

I still expect the E55 to beat me, but if I can keep within one car length I'd be very happy to say the least.

This looks like a great challenge for Shiv & the Vishnu team. We will all be most impressed if an Xede 335, with the steptronic handicap, can take an E55.

If you are referring to my car, it's not a steptronic, I have a manual

I'm not planning on taking my car to the track; however, I might be able to get 0-60mph and 1/4 mi. times if I can get my hands on my brother's G-Tech timer. I'm still interested after you get the Xede installed and challange the E55 again..I think you might be pleasantly surprised!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I'd love to see what times you pull with the G-Tech also!
