BMW Traditions

Ok. We all know what a bmw tradition is:

Rear wheel drive
hofmeister kink
etc

What happened to these fine traditions in the e90?

driver focused console
full spare in the trunk
center console (by the shifter) window controls
three level seat controls (in non auto seats) now they have an "under the seat lever"
turn key to start engine
oil temp gauge

What about a light curb weight?

What about the individual (a la carte) optioning system?

All gone to impress badge whores. Nothing against BMW, it's just business.

Technology, that's what happened. Get with it.

Buy an M car, it has an oil temp gauge.

None of these except the driver focused console is a BMW tradition. The driver focused console was originated by BMW and is now found in Buicks. It is also - with the amount of technology in the car - evolving. iDrive provides the driver with far more info than then console did.

The window controls were not a BMW tradition; they were a cost saving measure and were not found in most BMW ranges in recent years.

Audis are tanks! Very heavy and have received high marks in crash tests. Now if you want a performance car instead of a tank, buy a BMW. Weight is your enemy in performance and fuel economy but does help in crash survivability

bmw's should never get rid of the dual round headlights and the kidneys.
also, the straight 6 they have perfected should never leave.
thats about it.

edit: i mean never as they should never change it.

Uh, have you looked at the front of a BMW recently. It still has dual round lights, although they are not as distinct as they used to be. Of course, earlier BMWs didn't have dual round headlamps either.

Oh, and the kidneys are still there too.

i'm not talking about actual weight my friend. im talking about feeling the weight. feeling that heavy door close on its way, the whole car ingeneral. I would never buy/drive anything else other then a BMW, even though my current one is having so many problems, 90% sure im driving around with bad valve lifters, i still dont care i love them. the kidney grills are a huge dissapointment to me, and to everyone i'm sure. i hate that thick front lip, its hideous. only thing that annoyed me was the coupe got them. that was a real slap in the face, but again, it was there way of showing that this coupe really shares nothing with the sedan, unline all previous models. in order to give, you have to take, and thats what happens. sure i understand the changes, and BMW will always produce an amazing car, but i wish they didnt follow this "modernized" route, and stuck with traditional styling a bit more. to me the e46 was a perfect blend of modernization, and aggresive styling, but thats my opinion. ofcourse they have to cut into the luxury, modernized technology, sexy body lines market, but i care nothing about this, and i'm sure alot of people dont either. all that said, doesnt mean i still dont love BMW

I've got the oil temp gauge in my E92 which is pretty much worthless for an early warning engine overheating condition. By the time it indicates HOT, your engine is pretty much fried. I would much rather have a faster indicating, true-reading water coolant temperature gauge, but that has been replaced by 2 idiot lights: (1)Your Engine Is Getting Hot and (2)Your Engine Has Overheated and Now Needs Replacing.

I also miss the traditional 3 Gauge Instrument Cluster that has been standard for the past several decades.

I really miss the full size spare tire...mainly for long trips away from home in the event of a massive blowout or sidewall damage. Your only option then is to call a tow truck.

The ignition key I don't miss. Comfort Access is great. Just get in your car and hit the start button and you are off.

I've still got the hofmeister kink, but the doctor said it should go away in time.

All of the recent changes have been the result of advanced technology (computerized readouts) and economics (production cost reduction). I'm afraid we'll have to live with them from now on.

Ya'll whine a lot. I find my E90 vastly superior in every way to my old first of four BMWs, an E36 coupe. Its faster, has more grip, is larger, its FAR SAFER, etc.

And the console is oriented to the driver, not just as much as previous cars.

How is it whining when a 335 weighs as much a small SUV?

Or when a Z4 driver removed from weight figure still weighs as much as a Honda Civic?
