my side mirror cracked.. how should i approach the dealership?

when i drove home late last nite, i am positive that my driver side mirror wasn't cracked, but just today when i went out to the car, the mirror was cracked halfway down. i inspected the mirror closely, but couldn't find any sign of someone hitting it. so now, how should i approach the dealership? should i tell them the truth and say it's probably a mfg. defect? or should i make up something to save the cost of replacing it?
here's a pic of it!

I'd take it in to the dealer. If there's no sign of foul play you can argue the glass cracked - maybe from the mirror being heated.

You're not seriously asking us to tell you to lie are you?

Bring the car in. Show it to the dealer. Ask them what to do next.

i understand that part, but the weather was in the 50s last nite, and it rained all nite too, but that doesn't seem to be the cause though. my old cars has been through all sorts of weather, but never had cracked any windows or glasses. could it really be the heated mirrors that has caused it like rlc said?

glass can be covered, many cars have had histories of windshields spontaneously cracking

Many years ago when I was a young boy, my father's e36 rear screen 'exploded!', twice!! while I was in the back seat!!! It was like a brick had hit it, but the whole thing shattered into those tiny small bits of glass. Freaky!

A bad connection to the heating element in the glass was blamed by the dealer, causing uneven heat distribution in the glass, resulting in the shattering.

The cold and hot issue sounds like a defect and needs addressing!

You might as well tell the truth - they'll do what they determine happened anyway. Lieing will just make them less likely to cover it.

Just tell them the truth. My wife's mirror cracked on her Land Rover LR3 and they replaced it under warranty. GL
