Oil question...

Hello peeps,

Quick question, my 335d has Castrol Edge TD 0W-30 in it already but it needs a top up, I believe the 0W-30 has been discontinued, is it ok to now just top it up with 5W-40? Or do I need to do a complete change to prevent mixing of grades?

Cheers fella. As luck would have it I found a litre bottle of 0W-30 and banged that in. Weirdly though, adding a litre only brought the level up to halfway between the min-max marks on the dipstick.

According to the handbook the difference between min/max is supposed to be spot on 1 litre.

WTF is going on there?? I will grab some more 0W-30 if I can failing that, Halfrauds have a special on where if you buy 4L you get a 1L free so will just grab some 5W-30 on that offer and keep the 4L for when it's service time (which will be later this year).

Thanks again Tony.

I believe Castrol are rebranding the Edge range soon, to do away with 'Diesel' and 'Petrol' oils, combining them into one product.

I have used the Diesel Edge in my petrol performance cars for years.
It carries the VW 505.1 which according to those in the industry, is quite a difficult approval to achieve.

Just a double check guys, is the Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40 a "Low SAP" oil?

The bottle stats BMW-LL04, but just wanted to double check.

Cheers.

Thanks mate.

The Halfraudsters had the Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40 on offer, got 2x 4L and 2x 1L for £80. Means I have two 1L bottles for top-ups and enough for a service later in the year

Just a general question, I've been reading up on oil grades. Would I be correct in saying the following:

When at operating temperature, the 5W-40 will be more viscous than the 0W-30. Therefore 5W-40 will therefore be offering more protection when the engine is up to temp.

Also, the 5W-40 will be slightly more viscous when cold, does this mean slightly less protection is on offer when the engine is cold as it will take a bit longer to get moved around and properly covering the various components?

Just trying to understand and learn a bit more.

Asda have 5 litres of Mobil 1 esp LL04 5w 30 for £32. 1 litre is £8.5 (or wrongly priced at £6). Three 5 litre jars should do 2 changes
