Braided lines, Hawk pads, motul 660
I have never really spent much time on brake systems. More of a clutch man. Thinking of taking the first step on the Z4M!?!
On a scale of 1 to 10...can I do this brake system upgrade for the first time or should I have a brake shop do the work? I have a full shop of standard tools, lift, and a brake bleeder bottle.

What is your reason for changing?
It makes a big difference in what feedback to give you.

High speed touring - various tracks in Oklahoma and Texas - open class. 4 to 6 times a year. I have enough driving experience and speed to be in the intermediate to advanced tract groups.
I considered a BBK upgrade but would like to try the OEM calipers before considering a change.

Good stuff
Unless you're a dedicated track junky, I agree OE calipers are more than adequate. I just changed to Cool carbon pads, with SS Stoptech lines & Motul 600. I was out last week on a very technical track that is known to be hard on brakes. (2.5 miles & 14 corners) The brakes far exceeded previous sessions on OE setup. Brake fade was never an issue. I would highly recommend the Cool carbons. I also chose the Motul 600, mainly because I'll get a little more life out of it for street. The SS stoptechs are great too, they've been revised now to replace all three pieces for the rear with one SS line. (3pc OE rear = 2 flex & 1 solid tube)

Swapping pads is cake and the Brake lines shouldn't be an issue. Careful with brake fluid, it will strip paint. Using a powerbleeder to flush the fluid makes it very easy & perfect pedal. I'd rate brakes as a 3-4 out of 10. It was one of the first things I learned to do.

Added bonus, dusting is lower and not as black.
They are rotor friendly as well.
