I dont use this that often, but.... do a search! There are about a dozen threads on this forum giving step-by-step instructions on this topic. If you have a specific question then ask it. But if you are looking for step-by-step instructions just do a

If that doesnt work, go to the home link website and use the canadian instructions. It took me a month to figure that out.

Thanks for posting the doc. I had tried to do this tonight and noticed that the transmitter stopped working whenever I pressed the homelink button. I was searching the forum and, ironically, I found this thread. Heh!

Page 83 here http://www.e90post.net/e92coupemanual1.pdf will show you how to program the homelink in the car.
If you have a garage door opener with rolling codes you will need to program the car in two steps. Both steps are covered in the manual. The first step will be to have the car learn the remote for the door opener and the second step will be to have the car learn the rolling code. When teaching the car to learn the remote the manual indicates that you should hold the remote 1-2 inches from the mirror. This step only works if you hold the remote directly behind the mirror on the drivers side of the mirror. If you hold it in front of the mirror you will be waiting forever for it to learn. Once you teach it the remote the rest is easy. It does help to have a second person to push the "red" learn button on the actual opener so you can press and hold the button in the car but you do have a max of 30 seconds to get to the car once you press the button on the opener. Make sure your car is fully in or out of the garage as you do this. |

This is what most people do wrong and what I did when I first tried programming it: I knew my garage door opener used the rolling code so I skipped the first step which was to determine what kind of garage door opener you have. So even if you know yours is the rolling code, first do the first step which is to make the homelink learn the remote first, then do the learn from the garage door motor.

I cleared the homelink first and then went to the garage door learn button and then back to the car for the homelink to pick up the code.

This is what I did. I don't know if this will work with your opener. After trying for days on this issue I decided to do it with the Actual Switch on the wall. Car needs to be in garage away from door travel line with door opened.
1. First reset the cars switch by pressing both 1 & 3 button on rearview mirror 2. Once the LED light on the rearview mirror starts to blink let go of the 2 buttons 3. Then press one of the button you want to program and the remote control of your door opener close to it. When you do this the garage door will close. 4. Once the LED starts to flash rapidly have someone standing near the wall switch of your garage door opener to hit the light button and while holding that down press the big button which opens the door. If the programing was good the light on the garage door opener should blink once or twice. Hope this works for you J

OK. I'm sure I'll be told to search but, I've read at least 6 different "how to's" on this from this forum, the Homelink website and, other forums and I still can't get the Homelink to recognize my remote.
I've held the damn thing an inch to 8 inches away, pointed it at the mirror from the drivers seat, beneath the mirror directly at the Homelink buttons, between the glass and the mirror, put fresh batteries in the remote, tried the cycling (canadian) method, installed a new opener that I knew was Homelink compatible (overhead door company), engine running, just ignition on, cursing and finally while holding my breath and trying not to rip the mirror off the windshield. What am I doing wrong? I can get it to clear any memory it had. It will seem like it is starting to learn the remote (it starts blinking, pauses like it is learning something, starts blinking again, pauses, starts blinking and continues until around 30 seconds have passed and then stops blinking until releasedand pressed again). But it will never blink rapidly. This is about as far as I've gotten. |

Hate to say this, but the directions in the manual worked perfectly for me with Liftmaster door openers. I programmed two of my three doors in short order. Can you have them replace the Mirror/homelink unit(if separate)? Yours may just be a bad unit...

I screwed around with mine last night for at least another 45 minutes and no progress. I'm probably going to go down to the dealership this weekend and see if they can get it to recognize the remote. BMW called the house today and asked my wife if there was anything she would change about the car. All she could come up with was "I'd make the Homelink easier to program." |

Programming the garage door opener on 335i
I was having trouble too.
I could hold the buttons and get it into program mode, with no difficulty. But couldn't seem to get it to recognize the remote I was using to program it. Then I held the remote in front of the rear view mirror, closer to the windshield, and voila, worked perfectly. |
