groan from rear brakes when exiting car

after stopping and parking, i open the door to get out and hear a groaning from the rear wheel (presumably the brake?) behind me as i shift my weight. i can continue to make it happen by kinda rocking myself back and forth in my seat.

normal? SA said it's common, likely the e-brake and completely ok, nothing needs to be looked at.

thanks,
dave

Mine does it too.

I drive a 6mt by the way.

You could test things out by (carefully!) getting out of the car on a level surface without the e-brake engaged. See if it still groans.

I've heard the suspension do that before. Not sure I've heard the brakes do it, though. But, as I think about it, maybe it is the brake. That's funny. All these years, on different BMWs, I've always figured it was the suspension making the noise -- after my fat ass gets out of the car.

Like a squeaking noise? Most likely the parking brake, mine does it too.

I've heard the squeak before too, a brief and really high-pitched sound, also when getting out of the car, yes?

This is more of a distinct "groan", sounds similar to how the brakes often groan as they're being released (on an AT, that is).

Marcus - I don't know that it's the brakes, that was just a guess. It may well be the suspension. In case it is, can you shed more light?

I had that the first two days I had my car. I assumed it was the rust the brakes wiped off after the car sat on the dealer lot for ~6 months. It never reappeared again since

Mine had the sound coming from the right rear, we contributed it to the parking brake on my 6MT.

It is normal. Its just the parking brake ensuring the car doesn't move.

the car moves a little when you get out, its just the friction of the pads on the rotors when you have you'r e-brake one. completely normal

E-brake doesn't have "rotor." E-brake is a DRUM.

I have to ask. Is this the first BMW any of you have ever owned? Every BMW I've owned in the last 20 years have done this. It is absolutely par for the course. As you get out of the car and the suspension unloads the rear wheel moves ever so slightly causing the drum in the rear brake to move against the e-brake shoe.

Exactly. Has has happened to every BMW I've owned. I always figured it was the suspension unloading. Ha! Because I never worried about it, I never inspected the cause of the noise.

But glad to know I have the definitive answer now.

Not sure if you're addressing me (the OP) or not (because you're quoting someone else), but if you are - it's not the 1st I've owned. I had two E36 M3s before this. They both did the e-brake "squeak" when exiting, they didn't groan. Sounds totally different, just wanted to ask.

Anyway, thanks for the explanation.

It's the e-brake, mine has been doing this for years. No big deal.
