Newbie - Car Tools?
Hey guys,
Flame away --> Just bought a used 2010 BMW 328xi from a dealer and its my first BMW. The car has run flat tires and I was playing around and exploring all the features and things the car has. I noticed that the car doesn't have any lug wrenchs or jack to dismount the tires...is the normal or am I just missing the materials? Is this due to the car having run flats tires that they decided against it? Sorry guys -- but I warned you...I'm a BMW newb -- but really excited of joining the community. Thanks. |

nope, BMW cheaped out on tools, no lug wrench, no jack, etc. But you can buy them for about $160 from anyone that sells BMW accessories. There are locations for them pre-molded into the trunk liner under the lift-up mat.

Or, have a look at any of the numerous "spare tire" threads. Lots of us hate the RFTs with a passion, and have replaced them, and either carry a compact spare and tools, or else fix-a-flat, BMW compressor kit, etc. The problem comes when you bust a runflat hundreds of miles away from the nearest BMW dealer or tire dealer who stocks them (and they might be out of stock anyway), then you wait! I ditched the runflats, bought a spare and jack kit from Bavarian Auto, and am a happy camper. |

I generally will be driving the car around the New York Tri-State area and maybe (once in a blue moon) going to upstate New York near Albany...
Don't have the BMW Road Side Assistance....but there are literally tons of BMW dealerships around here... I guess I'll read around here and figure it out.. THANKS! |

23pair, it looks like you've gotten pretty good advice already. It's amusing that you bring this up as your first inquiry/post. Plenty of grown men around here who have even seen most of their hair migrate from the top of their heads down to their backs have gotten their panties in a very tight and irritable wad over this subject. I sorta go both ways - I own RFTs on winters and DD's wheels, and am looking for ~another~ set (word!) for fun/track/summer etc that are not. Just be aware of pros and cons of each. Welcome to the forum, and enjoy your BMW.

I purchased the missing tools from my dealership...$2 for the sunroof manual open/close wrench, $6 for the wrench (14mm/11mm?), $4 for a deep well 17 mm socket, and a cheap wrench and torque wrench($20). You can get a cheap bottle jack for $10-$20. All this will fit in the empty space where a spare tire would go. You can also get a mini air compressor and fix -a-flat for pretty cheap...maybe $30. So, you can get all the crap you should have for a bit over $75.
My stock rfts are about dead at 15k miles...very much looking forward to seeing how she rides and handles with a set of hankook V12s...and happy to have the basic tools residing in my trunk. |
